Gary Johnson and Aleppo

Unfortunately, a third party candidate has finally gotten a lot of mainstream media coverage, but it is for something negative. When asked what he would do about Aleppo, Gary Johnson's response was, "What is Aleppo?" As an isolationist, maybe he doesn't pay much attention to what's going on outside the U.S.

Nonetheless, he at least comes across as more likable than the major party candidates. Trump would have pretended to know what he was talking about and then bashed the interviewer afterward for giving him a "trick" question. Clinton would have said that she couldn't remember being asked the question. At least Johnson admitted that he didn't know and openly stated that he felt bad because he should have known. However, Johnson does come across as an airheaded hippie who has done too many drugs. He didn't even know who Harriet Tubman was.

No, but if her ever needed to know that, he could hire a history teacher to give him the right answer.

A president can appoint someone to his or her cabinet who is more qualified to run the country. People can hire someone to do just about anything. What is your point?

The moment he selected the broken-down old drunk Bill Weld as his running mate, Johnson lost all credibility with me.

I should have bookmarked some of what Weld has said. What I recall is that he is stunningly wrong in what he says. And he is even less libertarian than is Johnson.

What the LP is good at is running people like Howard Stern, a Druid, a guy who turned himself blue with colloidal silver, a hooker...

Bill Weld actually sounds like the more coherent one. However, he might be less loyal to the Libertarian Party. He is friends with Clinton, and there are rumors that he might drop out if it looks like Trump will win. When asked about it, he wouldn't state that he wouldn't drop out in the interview I saw.

For many years the only time I ever heard of Aleppo was the hot sauce on FoodTV or the Cooking Channel. That part didn't bother me. Presidents get advisors.

Choosing some Republican who has registered as a Libertarian the week before was definitely a move to alienate folks who have been party members for decades. But was that move evil or just political idiocy?

By definition only a minority, or else Johnson and Weld wouldn't have been the slate. Either way, we're not exactly talking about a base of millions.

I assume you're complaining about Bill Weld, since Johnson's been in the LP for a while, and was the 2012 nominee. If so, sure, I'd agree that Weld isn't a perfect score on the Nolan chart. But who do you think Johnson could have chosen who would have better for fundraising, media attention, and appealing to millions of voters? And complaining they he was a Republican not long before seems odd, when no third party candidacy can even be a blip on the radar screen without appealing to disaffected members of major parties.
