I read the article about best value in colleges. I am wondering what might be the best value in doctoral education? Of course this varies by area of study, but I'm interested in your ideas.

    Thank you for sharing!

I think that value in a doctoral program might be a bit like value in a motor vehicle. It depends, at least in part, on how you plan to use it.

My vote would be for elite universities (e.g. Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Princeton). The reason why they are such great values (aside from being from the most well respected schools) is that they are almost always fully funded by the university. The student doesn't pay a dime. It is REALLY hard to beat that.

Yes, they are super competitive to get into, but that is the nature of great value schools. The better the value, the more people who apply to attend.

For this board (with its distance education format) the two best value schools that come to mind are Dakota State University's Doctor of Science (DSc) in Information Systems, and Valdosta State University's Doctor in Public Administration (DPA). Those are both (relatively) inexpensive online doctoral programs at solid state universities. As a result, they have had SIGNIFICANTLY more competitive admissions over the past few years.

The best value is intersection of the degree that you need and the degree you can do.

Pay more attention to the degree and less to the school.

If you're a practitioner not interested in teaching at regionally accredited schools, consider doing a professional doctorate at a nationally accredited school. Cheaper, faster, and possibly more relevant to your career.

Choose wisely. This is going to define you for the rest of your life. It's not like you'll do a second one, right?
