This is the first full week of my online class at Grand Canyon University. I tried to drop my online class, but GCU said that if I drop the class....I will have to pay off 1,495 dollars within 3 months! Most real colleges allow you to drop a class within the first 2 weeks of the semester....[IMG]

One of the schools that I facilitate for doesn't allow a refund after you log into the course for the first time. I work for GCU but I'm not as familiar with the process. I often have students who show up on the roster for Day 1 and then are dropped; I assumed that they weren't charged - I know that I'm paid less to facilitate if students withdraw so...

Did you read the university's catalog/website and find out what their policies are in regards to dropping courses?

The GCU course drop policy is located on page 86 of the document linked to below. For online students, it looks like they give a 100% refund for courses dropped before the 1st week, 75% refund for those dropped during the first week, and no refund beyond that. The rules are a bit more lenient for traditional campus students. Take a look:

Is that because of GCU, or is it because of federal financial aid regulations?

so are you sure it's not a matter of "you have to pay" but rather that you "still owe" part of the course cost? Based on FJD's post, it looks like you would only be entitled to a refund of 75% (or still owe 25% if you hadn't paid already).

Thank you all for your kind assistance. I communicated with an "enrollment manager" at Grand Canyon University. I am not entitled to any sort of refund because Week 1 began on October 29th. According to Grand Canyon University, this is now Week 2 (which began on November 1st). Since this is Week 2, I am not entitled to any refund....so I have to take the course and pass it.... Grr....[IMG]

I'm sorry you are having difficulty. I am a student at GCU too but have never dropped a course. Unless your track is different than mine, Week 2 would have started on November 5...not November 1. The week always starts on Thursday for my online courses. Perhaps you need to go back to the enrollment adviser and get clarification on this?
