    TEKMAN Semper Fi!

"Each of the five online classes that make up the first semester costs $150, and the proctored exam will cost between $400 and $800, professors said. The second semester will cost at least half the price of the yearlong program, or about $33,000, MIT officials said."

$400.00 to $800.00 per exam? and $33,000.00? It is confusing....

It is. But it tells me everything I need to know, which is that this is a gimmick.

I mean, if you charge for access to it, even if it's "just" $150, then it's a normal online course, it's not a MOOC. So that word can just be removed from this situation altogether.

The other "interesting" part of this:

In addition to the degree program, MIT said it will grant a new “MicroMaster’s” credential for completing the online semester and passing the exam.

For some reason, this "MicroMasters" almost reminds me of the "Nanodegree" concept: https://www.udacity.com/nanodegree
I suppose the "Nanodegree" is more than one course however. Interesting stuff.

They could scarcely have come up with a name that more plaintively begs to be misused.

Should call it a postgraduate diploma or something similar, standardize it to what the UK does.

Had an applicant two years ago who claimed a Masters from Villanova.

Background came back unable to verify the degree. Had him bring it in. It was a Masters Certificate. Sadly he seemed genuinely confused when I rescinded his offer. His LinkedIn still shows him having a Masters and he's employed elsewhere.

As chorizo suggests, a standard system would be very nice. I like the idea of a postgraduate diploma. Though I'm just as happy to run with Undergraduate and Graduate Certificates. Whenever we add the words "Master" or "MBA" to the title of a non-degree I feel like there are people who simply allow their hope that they just scored an MBA over one semester to override any sense of reason.

They could come up with the "Infinitesimal Diploma." Micro, Mini and Nano sound so 20th Century. :mischievous:

I feel like it would be more efficient to just take this to the metric system. Like, if I earn 10 deci-masters I can trade it in for a centi-masters.

We can eliminate the doctorate altogether by simply conferring the title of "Doctor" on the holders of a yocto-masters.

You, sir, win the internets today. :hail: Although I must admit I would be very happy with a Zepto-Masters myself. I feel that only Master Yoda will reach the Yocto level.

Yeah, like "I want to super-size my Masters degree." It could be a Mega-Masters or a pocket-doctorate.:eek1::no1:

The only disagreement I have with Father Guido is that in addition to "Como esta usted?" I also remember some pretty good Spanish swear words.

So, you went to the 10 minute college?

  18. Kizmet

    Probably closer to 6.5 minutes.

Slacker. You stopped at a masters degree. For a mere 3.5 more minutes you could have gotten a PhD. :twak:

So you are saying that a MOOC must be free? From where are you getting this definition?! There are free, freemium, subscription based, and other models that are being used for MOOCs.
