    Hello folks,

I have been lurking here for a few weeks. I find that the discussions here are highly enriching. A bit of my background first I have two Masters - one a RA MS in info systems and the other top 3 ivy MBA program ;-). I am not able to shake off the idea of pursuing scholarship for its own sake. While teaching is not my primary goal - I would like to teach after a corporate career sometime in the future. And I am broke - seriously - still paying my student loans.

So I am trying to find most affordable programs (maybe even AACSB). I looked into some of the threads and I find that the SA programs come in at the low price point. But accreditation is a problem except at Stellenbosch and USB. Any other alternatives I should be looking into?

I am also confused about the difference between UNISA's D.Adm and DBL - and which program I would fit into. I would like it to be as close to an academic degree like PhD as possible. I realize I am probably asking for bit much... This is my first time in a DL program.

    Help me out!!!

Yes, Rmm: I meant AACSB accreditation. I learnt from going through these threads that these programs are indeed RAd. Can you please shed some light on the difference between D.Adm, D.Comm and DBL? Will I be eligible for D.Adm or is it just wasted effort? Thank you for your advice!

Why the secrecy regarding the schools you attended? The reason why we list them on our signature line is so others may see what programs (DL or otherwise) we are in/have graduated from and can ask questions. We are all open source here. :)

My advice, don't do a PhD program now. Concentrate on your career, pay off your student loans.

Doing a PhD program now will only add stress and more debt to your life.

When the time is right, do a program that offers full assistantship, or that your employer will pay for.

    Edowave,

I understand your point of view. I would like to protect my identity. So I have to decline revealing the schools.

Thank you for your input. I agree focussing on career and student loans is what I will focus on. Meanwhile, if I can scratch that itch..... ;-)

Appreciate any feedback you might have on the questions...

    Thanks Randell!

Can anyone shed more details on the nuances of these differences between D.Admin, D Comm and DBL?

Ideally I would like to do research on Strategic management in a nascent industry. I dont care about the title as long as I can work on the topic.

IACI seems to think I should go for a PhD in Info systems as I have a masters in the same discipline... If only I could rework my topic into a Info sys sounding one... ;-)

Appreciate all your suggestions and help folks!

The world is full of different doctorate designations, the PhD is the most known in the US but if you go to France or Spain, they would actually think is a Doctorate in Philosophy as in these countries they use "Doctorado en Administracion" or "Doctorat en administration" for business doctorates

The DBL is the SA is a professional doctorate (equivalent to the American DBA) while the DComm or DAdmin are mainly academic doctorates (equivalent to the PhD).

Legally, you can use the designation that a foreign equivalent evaluator gives you (E.g. wes). If someone comes with a SA DComm, most likely would get a an American PhD equivalent. Technically you can use this title in your resume but would need to disclose both (original title-Dcomm and the equivalent title-PhD).

I hold an Australian DBA, WES gave me the equivalent of an American PhD for this degree. In my resume I disclose both the original title (Doctor of Business Administration) and equivalent American or Canadian title (PhD). My University uses the WES title for Catalogs.

To the 100,000 add those that go the foreign route like the OP.
The vast majority of people with low profile PhDs work either in the private sector where the PhD is really not required (e.g. a PhD in CS working as a programmer) or become professional adjuncts.
I believe there are still industries that pay top dollar for a PhD in quantitative finance, statistics, engineering.

    Thanks folks

    Thanks RFValve,

Did not login for several days. I just sent my application in through IACI for Phd in IS/Comp Sci to see if I get lucky! Will keep everyone posted. I will progress through other schools rest of year 2015 until I get in. But I am going to apply to one school at a time since I am in no hurry and use their feedback to improve my proposal with each rejection! :)

    Happy weekend all.

Speaking about Professional Practitioner wants to have a Ph.D; I encountered one of my professor's dissertation phase student. He is 24 years old, received his Bachelor when he was 16 years old, and Master degree by 21. We had a talk about Ph.D program, he asked me if I do not want to be a full-time research what I am doing at Nova Southeastern University. I told him that earning a Ph.D degree is part of my personal enrichment and preparing for my future, I might one point to quit my practitioner life to become a scholar. He said that is not a good reason to earn a Ph.D, it is for academic teaching and researching. Then he said that it seems I want to have 3 letters after my name, John Doe, Ph.D.

I asked him whether he is currently employed. He said no, he is a full-time student and has never been in the workforce. Then I asked him what is he doing at Nova Southeastern University? Nova Southeastern University's Graduate School of Computer and Information Sciences Ph.D programs are designed for professonals, who are full-time employed and have family. Therefore, they have two weekend residencies per semester in Fort Lauderdale, Florida campus. He did not answer my question. lol
