Isn't "business analyst" one of those job titles that used to mean something specific but now can mean almost anything?

I've seen many business analyst positions that "only" require a bachelor's degree in either finance or accounting. Of course, a graduate degree in either finance or accounting or an MBA would boost your chances of landing such a job. And a professional certification (CPA, CMA, etc) would increase your chances even more.

Steve is absolutely right, the translation of responsibilities will vary by company. I'm a BA in the medical field and within our department we're asked to translate business requirements into system functionality and then implement it. We have people from all backgrounds, though most either come from healthcare or IT. Academically, the minimum anyone has is a BA, though graduate degrees are in abundance, including a few MDs / PharmDs / PhDs.
