And that's where you lost me. Those who most influence popular culture may excel at spreading the idea that liberals are more open minded than conservatives, but I think liberals and conservatives are simply open and closed minded about different things.

I do not think NorCal meant liberal as in political orientation with communitarianist and statist goals. I believe NorCal's professor, and correct me if I misunderstood, is suggesting receptiveness, willingness, lack of reticence.

But, I am not even going this far. I disagree with this basic definition of the educator's notion of liberal.

It implies exactly what was discussed in the thread about mandatory college. It implies that people who go to college are smart, beautiful and good - all others are dumb, ugly and bad.

I put 'Republican', because that's how I'm registered. But in reality, I consider myself basically an independent. It was just that when I registered here in California, you had to be registered with a party to vote in its primary. As far as political philosophy goes, I'm a social moderate with libertarian tendencies, I guess.

    I agree with that statement.

There is no such thing as a liberal Republican.

Log cabin republicans, about as socially liberal as you can get. I think Delta's point is that there is a little bit of everything in each party. Plenty of democrats for example voted to go to war in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

There's a "no true Scotsman" problem in there in that it depends who gets to say what a liberal is.

Democrat and moderately liberal. But as said, it depends on the issue.
I'm pro choice, and a straight ally. But I'm also neutral on the gun debate.
