When Steve and I applied, there was no foundations exam. We had to take another entry exam used for assessment purposes. From what I gather from speaking with others, the Foundations Exam covers basic skills, like grammar and punctuation, basic math, and some statistics. I think anyone with a degree should do okay on it. I am not a math person, so were I to take it, I'd have refreshed my basic knowledge of stats and math, like things such as the mean, median, mode and range... stuff like that.

So the last post was done by me. I figured I'd resurrect this sucker to share that I'm done! I defended my dissertation yesterday and will walk in about two weeks! Woohoo! C'mon, Steve! You're up next!

That's totally awesome! I'm being really slow with my dissertation with everything else that's going on, so I'll still be a while. But I couldn't have been lapped by a better person!

Thanks, everyone! And Steve, I doubt that'll happen anytime soon. I'll just be excited to finish this semester!

Matt--I contacted you via linkedin a few weeks ago. I'm also a student at UC and I'm very happy to see that you've completed your journey. I take the Dissertations Seminar starting in two weeks. Maybe this time next year I'll also be singing the praises of UC. It has been a great program!!

I've just completed the submission of all my application materials, and am waiting for the Foundations test. Hoping to start May 8, but have not idea which or how many courses.

    Hi, everyone

I am considering applying to the Ed.D program at the University of the Cumberlands but have a few questions I would like honest answers to. I'll ask them in list form.
    1. How long are you allowed to take to complete the program? (I want to get started but may only be able to take courses as I can afford them.)
    2. I majored in Secondary Education Social Studies as an undergraduate but didn't have any history classes in my Master's program. Would I qualify for the history concentration?
    3. Is the dissertation topic determined by your concentration, always in educational leadership, or is it student's choice?
    4. Are there several options of courses each semester for each of the concentrations or are the choices slim?
    5. Have you known anyone who has earned or been denied a high level position simply because of completing this program?

I'm sure I will think of others but that's enough for now. Thanks!

    Superintendent prep?

I'm interested in UC. It looks as though it's coursework for preparation to work in higher ed. I am currently a high school principal looking to advance to the superintendency. Is UC appropriate for this type of career aspiration or should I look elsewhere? Thanks!

Admissions is a better source for this information than I am, but I'll give it a try.

    1. You can take courses one at a time, I did. If you think you would need to skip semesters, then I'm not sure whether that's okay, ask admissions.

    2. I think so, you would have to take 18 semester-hours of graduate level History courses as your concentration.

    3. It can be more broad than that. Anything that fits under the fairly wide umbrella of "leadership" is on the table.

    4. I transferred my concentration in, so I don't know.

    5. Why would they? "We were going to hire you, but we were hoping you'd have dropped out!" If you meant something else, please specify.

Actually there are a lot of K-12 educators in the program, and a lot of faculty members with K-12 experience. It's a suitable program for both the K-12 and higher education levels.

Actually there is a specific leadership program for K-12. I know because I apparently applied for it but wanted Higher Education. I had to submit a different application where I answered "NO" to the first question on if I wanted to get the Ed.D in Leadership from the College of Education. Not sure why they are two programs of the same name in different places but it is what it is.

    Does anyone have study materials?

I am currently attending the University of the Cumberlands, and I am preparing to take comps in a couple of weeks. I am in need of PowerPoints from The Change Process class? Does anyone have a copy of them?

If you're on Facebook, look for Cumberlands Leadership Association. There are plenty of folks there who can help with Power Points.
