I am definitely excited for the opportunity. I spoke with someone early on in regards to my BA and MA both being from Western Governor's. Since it is competency based, they award a 3.0 GPA to every one. That is unfortunate for me since it is not a GPA that most doctoral programs want to see. They assured me that students have been successfully admitted with a similar grading scale. I suppose we will see. I do have other undergrad work but WGU is my only actual degree.

I appreciate the discussion and advice. It definitely helps to ease my nerves!

They scheduled my interview shortly after taking the test. I suppose that means I did good enough on it. It wasn't difficult, IMO.

I appreciate your encouragement and advice! It really helped calm my nerves.

Now, I need to decide on my 18 hour area. I'm all science and that isn't an option. It looks like education or psychology are my best bets. I'm excited to hopefully begin soon!

Did you ask them and they said no to science? I ask because they allow up to 18 credits in transfer, so you might be able to take 18 credits in the science of your choice somewhere else, transfer it in, and satisfy your concentration requirement that way. (I'm not sure they'd allow it, but asking is free!)

It may be due to the resources available. The school has 'experts' (people holding doctorates and teaching/researching at the graduate level) in all of the areas that the catalog lists for the AoS. They may not feel comfortable in regards to effectively evaluating dissertation topics outside of those areas, since the AoS should ultimately have some major impact on and inclusion in the dissertation. They simply may not want to have to go through the hassle of rounding up of committee members/chairs from outside the school for specific areas that they don't cover at the grad/doctoral level.

Grats! What are you taking as your first course in the program?

I'm taking Learning in Adulthood and The Change Process. I hope that taking two isn't a bad choice right off the bat. I am in the PhD track. My first class was tonight and enjoyed it!

I've only ever done one at a time. I suppose it depends what else you have going on. I'm extremely busy, even one at a time is a scheduling exercise. But if you can do it, great for you!

Hey there. I am in the counseling/supervision PhD program there. Just enrolled in the Change Process class and Program Development. I love this school, you like it?

Dr. Atkinson and Dr. Vann for those? Those are the two I did last term. Learning in Adulthood was ok, but I really enjoyed The Change Process.

Yes, those are the instructors. So far, so good. I teach full-time, high school Biology and I have two children in activities. To say that I'm busy is an understatement, but I'll see if I can still find time to sleep and take two classes. If I can, obviously, finishing sooner rather than later is a good thing. ;)

I'm going to be Psych/PhD. I am super excited and love the school so far.

I am a new student at the University of Cumberlands and I'm starting with just one class to get my feet wet. Even if I take one class per session, I will finish my coursework in 1 1/2 years, not bad! Had my first online class session last night for Learning in Adulthood. Dr. Simpson is very nice and personable! I hope more students discover UC. The total cost of the EdD would be $15,750 plus books. There are no residencies required which is a big plus! Check it out. Steve is the one who led me to discover UC. Thanks, Steve!

Great, Russ! I'm glad so many people are enjoying this program as much as I am.

For those interested, the course selection for the Spring 2015 semester (Jan-April) is up now, so you can sign up for your classes for next semester.

I'll still have three more AoS courses to take, and that leaves me with an opening for one more. I'm trying to decide what course in the Leadership program to take during the second term. I've got Social Bases of Behavior (Social Psychology for my AoS) on Mondays.
That leaves me with the following options:
    Tuesdays
    Inferential Stats (Dr. Vann)
    Wednesdays
Politics of Educational Decision Making (Dr. Goff) (with a note that says 'Fees Applicable' on it - anyone know anything about that?)
Online Teaching and learning (Mr. (?) Stringer)
Grant Writing and Proposal Development (Anderson)
    Thursdays
Program Planning and Assessment (Dr. Allen)

Anyone have any input on any of these classes & instructors? I’ve had Vann in the past and I liked his teaching style, but I'm not sure if I'm in the mood to take Stats right now; I was going to save that and take it at the same time as my Biostatistics course, which fulfills the 2nd research component for the PhD (EdD students don't have to worry about the 2nd research class).

Of course, they had the other class that I really wanted (Organizational Behavior, again for the PhD program requirement) at the exact same time as the Social Psych class, but I need Social Psych and don't want to have to wait a year for it. Hopefully they offer Org Behavior more often than once yearly.

I don't know about the others, but I've taken Politics of Educational Decision Making with Dr. Goff and am now taking Program Planning and Assessment with Dr. Allen. You can't go wrong with either. I've also taken Online Teaching and Learning, but it was with Dr. Simpson.

Pleased to see you getting this finished up, Steve. I enjoyed our classes together at ATSU. This sounds like a very interesting program, and I know you will do well.

Thanks, Dr. McDonald! I'm not really finishing any time soon, though, as I have coursework all through next year and then the dissertation after that. But I'll get there.

    Steve,

One question that I did want to ask you is how many doctoral credits did you have overall before transfering to UC? I know that in the beginning of this thread you said that they were willing to take 18 of your credits, but were there any additional doctoral credits of yours that they did not take?

In my Ed.D program there are basically two separate specialization/concentration tracks that I will be expected to choose from. Option A is specializing in leadership through implementation/creation of community based programs. Option B is concentrating on leadership benefiting the community directly through creation of an internet based program.

The problem (at least in my case) is that a doctoral student at ACE cannot specialize in either program until he or she has completed somewhere in the ball park of 30-35 credits.

So if I were to become accepted into UC I don't believe that they would accept any of my soon to be nine doctoral credits from ACE.

On the other hand me wanting to switch to UC was more along the lines of personal satisfaction rather than a practical pursuit.
