First time poster....don't bash me too much! I need some advice as to which direction and program would serve my needs best. I attended college for about a year just out of high school, about 20 years ago. At that time, it just wasn't for me. I wanted to be working instead of furthering my education and I do not regret that at all. For about the last 12 years I have been self employed on and off, selling one business and starting another a couple years later, all on a small scale. My current business is growing yearly at a healthy pace and it's becoming less of a mom and pop and maturing more into a legitimate competitor in our field. All this being said, I definitely need more of a handle on the business side of things. I'm not looking for a bachelor's degree to put on my resume, but rather to acquire the skills to make the most out of my business and to give it the leadership it deserves. I understand that in most circumstances a physical education is most desirable, but with my work schedule, it would be impossible. We contract all over the states and overseas, there are many times I have to leave for an unknown amount of time spur of the moment. All things considered, I think the only option for continuing my education is via a distance program. With what little background I have provided, I would be very interested in hearing what you all have to say regarding specific business programs and online degrees. Will this give me the tools I need to reach my goals? What distance programs would you recommend for me? Thanks for ANY advice or experience, they will be appreciated.
Have you contacted the Small Business Administration? They have excellent advice on their website, and people who are willing to help with advice for your business. See Local Assistance | The U.S. Small Business Administration | SBA.gov. Good luck!
In lieu of the degree route: Have you considered MOOC - Massive Open Online Courses (free online courses)? In the same vein, I've heard (and experienced) only great things about SCORE, formerly known as the Service Corps of Retired Executives.
I forgot to mention that the SBA website shows online courses as well...see http://www.sba.gov/tools/sba-learning-center
