  2. Still the case. I have a friend who is over there at U Bergen.

Bear in mind that Norway's cost of living is quite high, even compared to other Scandinavian countries. Their booming oil exports have put long-term inflationary pressure on the economy. The flip side of that coin is a remarkably high quality of life.

As long as you don't think of it as a "free" education, it's a very economical one. And it can be made more economical if you can get a scholarship/fellowship for living expenses.

Some of the discussion that has occurred in the past is that a person might be able to complete a dissertation-only research doctorate such as is done in some British or Australian universities at a Norwegian school for little if any cost.

Will that be in Bokmål or Nynorsk? Yes, I'm sure you can do it, but I doubt if you'll find very many English-language programs. Great country - high standard of living, as another poster said. Last time I looked, unemployment was running about 2%.

Good place for anthropology /ethnology people, too - and arts / music scholars. Indigenous Sámi people have very interesting multi-faceted culture - and their own language, of course.

I gather that in Norway at the doctoral level, one can write one's thesis in English. The question is whether it can all be done remotely, even if faculty advisors are amenable, since the University of Oslo's information on doctoral programs refers to coursework. (It also tantalizingly refers to a separate Dr. Philos. program wherein one writes a thesis independently and then applies for recognition of it, which would be the Holy Grail of many around here, except that one must live in Norway to apply.)

So, maybe for someone it's worth a bit of investigative time to check it out. Nice.
