I see the University of Leicester has moved up about 35 spots to #161 in the world. Cool.

What? The infamously popular LaSalle University didn't make the top ten?

I'm a little surprised there aren't one or two more from continental Europe but otherwise I have no real problem with this list.

    Which LaSalle?

There is only one infamously popular LaSalle. The mill.

  7. I find it surprising the Sorbonne no longer rates the top 400 at all. Granted, they are humanities-focused and have no hard sciences, but their reputation in the humanities is superb.

The Sorbonne, or University of Paris, was formally divided into 13 smaller universities (Paris 1 to Paris 13) in 1970. Some of these still have the word "Sorbonne" in their name; others do not. Three of the 13 successor universities are on the Times Higher Education "Top 400" list:

96 Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris 6)
    114 Université Paris-Sud (Paris 11)
178 Université Paris Diderot (Paris 7)

I find it interesting that the Indian Institute of Technology is not on the list. It isn't even on the list of top 100 engineering and technology schools. For years, I have heard that IIT was comparable to MIT in the US, and produced equally skilled engineers.

There are 16 Indian Institute of Technology campuses. Four of them (IIT Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, and Roorkee) are on the Times Higher Education list, in the 351-400 group.

The Times rankings largely reflect a school's reputation for cutting-edge (i.e. doctoral-level) research. The IITs have a strong reputation for training engineers at the BS and MS level, but they aren't known as world-class research institutes at the PhD level.

In the same way, Cal Poly (formally the "California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo") is generally accepted as one of the top public engineering schools in California. But Cal Poly isn't on the Times list, even though it competes for undergraduates with schools like UC Davis or UC Santa Barbara, which are in the Times Top 100. Cal Poly has a great reputation for BS and MS engineers, but they don't have any PhD programs, so they don't do the kind of research that is needed to make the Times list.
