I recognize that there are some top quality universities offering Masters degrees via DL, but what about Bachelors degrees? A little residency wouldn't be the end of the world...

    Thank you.

Thanks guys. I'm aware of HES, but was wondering what else was available.

Kizmet - just asking in general terms... Say History, or Psychology....

The US News Rankings was a great find... But I'd be surprised if those names cannot be topped...

This list is okay to find out which schools offer online programs, but I wouldn't take the rankings seriously. A bachelor's from Penn State is going to look much better than a bachelor's from most of the schools that are ranked higher. There are also great schools with online programs that are unranked, lowly ranked, or have an unpublished rank. Rutgers is one, for example. Employers are not going to think that APUS is better than Rutgers based on this list.

Not to be picky but how would a bachelor's from Penn State look better than a school that is ranked higher and why would an employer think that APUS is better than Rutgers?

Any of the UOL programs where the lead examiner is the LSE. Some international students have gained graduate admittance to the LSE and Oxford. I have an AdvDip from the University of Oxford in Data & Systems Analysis; its not a bachelors degree but it was completed via distance.

Sanantone, I replied in haste and I agree with your findings. The rankings are a bit odd; I was surprised that both Regis and ASU ranked low.

Reading the methodology, it seems like the ranking is heavily based on customer service and student support by distance. Since most traditional colleges are relatively new at offering online degrees, they haven't quite mastered the distance support aspect as well as non-traditional colleges. These rankings don't really say much about the quality of education.

Its also conceivable that traditional online schools (APUS) actually have extensive experience with serving and teaching online and distance education customers yet may not be tier 1 in research.

Some schools can't be ranked in the more traditional rankings because of their non-traditional nature. It has nothing to do with being a tier 1 research university. Many non-research schools are ranked. It probably has something to do with most non-traditional schools having very low admissions requirements and their reputations. USNews rankings are partially based on selectivity and reputation.

I attended one of the ranked schools on the online degrees list. It's a for-profit. They obviously had a lot of experience with making the admissions process as easy as possible. At first, the technology they used for delivering courses seemed a bit primitive, but they made major improvements before I left. Everything was great except for the education (and cost). The coursework was extremely easy, my classmates were functional illiterates, and I didn't learn a thing.

This is an idea that has been expressed in the past. A school may be a smaller liberal arts college that focuses on teaching rather than research. In the small la school the student gets more attention from a prof dedicated to teaching but maybe a a more quiet rep. in the big research school the student gets lots of teaching assistants working under a more famous name and less individual attention. pick your poison.
