A relative asked me to help her find any regionally accredited online college or university in the US where she can take business and management related degree for less than $200 per credit hour. I was wondering if anyone has an idea about which way to go. Thanks

Probably the least expensive way to earn a degree is to CLEP out of as many credits as possible and then transfer them to one of the "big 3." If you read through our CLEP forum you'll pick up a lot of useful information on that subject.

Does she have in-state residence status in any U.S. state? What level will she need credit at: Lower-level undergraduate (associate's, first two years of a bachelor's – at this level, don't forget community colleges, including for transfer onward to a four-year school), upper-level undergraduate (final two years of a bachelor's), both, or graduate? Will she be transferring anything in or starting from scratch?

Thanks for your response. Since she resides outside the US, we both think CLEP will not work. We thought about CLEP but there is no center here in Central Europe (Slovakia to be specific). If there is any way she can do CLEP here in Slovak Republic please guide us through as we have scanned through the CLEP websites but couldn't find a way out

She doesn't have any residence status in the US. In fact she resides in Central Europe. As for the the level she needs credit in, she wouldn't mind any community college insofar it is regionally accredited. If she can't get a 4 year college, then she could go for 2 and afterwards complete the other two at other regionally accredited university or college. Thanks

Thanks, Johann. I will take a look at the first ones- Clovis and Maricopa. I opened the Ten colleges link and it seems they charge about 300 dollar per credit hour.

I've got 24 credit hours from Clovis Community College. All eight classes had exams that were unproctored and online. Not sure of all of them, though.

There are plenty of community colleges that are cheaper. There might be some in your state that are well under $100 per credit hour. For upper level credits at a 4-year institution, the best chance of finding credits for less than $200 would be at an in-state university/college. Fort Hays State University charges all online students $178.30. Western Governors University charges a flat fee of just under $3,000 per 6-month term and you can complete as many credits as you can. However, WGU credits might be difficult to transfer since they are on a competency-based system.

I am aware that there are some community colleges that are cheaper. What I am not aware of is whether these community colleges (assuming they are meant to serve the community for which they exist or from where they operate) offer online courses to OUT OF THE USA STUDENTS. The person who needs this cheap online regionally accredited credits is an African and residing in Europe. I am still trying to find my ways on the Clovis and New Mexico Colleges websites but it seems I could not see any link for out of state registration. Maybe I am not patient enough- I'll check again. If there are other cheaper colleges out there (Google doesn't help in this regards), please let me know. Thanks

Hi, that sounds like good news. :) Do you know whether Clovis offer their online courses to students who reside outside the United States and Canada? The person in question resides in Europe (Slovak Republic). Thanks

Good question. I did a Google search and came up with the following thread on here:

    http://www.degreeinfo.com/general-distance-learning-discussions/31738-clovis-community-college-questions.html

As of 2009, they did not offer their online courses to international students. I am not sure if this has changed, however.

The out-of-state fees ($62) for New Mexico Junior College distance-ed are here:
Tuition and Fees - New Mexico Junior College

Clovis is $89 per credit for out-of-state. The info is on its "front page" here. Unfortunately, as Lance has informed us, they (probably) do not enrol international students. http://www.clovis.edu/

Thanks all. As for Clovis, I think they do not offer foreign students online admissions. We were not able to fill in the online admission form because (it seems) they did not make provisions for students outside Europe. We could not choose a country outside the US from the drop down.

Ok, here's an idea then. How about a BSBA through TESC? She could take many of the requirements through Straighterline, Penn Foster College (NA accredited, but ACE-approved classes transfer to TESC), Saylor.org, ALEKS, BYU Independent Study, etc? She just might be able to complete all the requirements and transfer them all in.

Thanks for the info. I am not sure (I will have to check now) whether these plans will fit her pocket as she originally wants colleges that are cheaper than Peru State. Seems Straightliner is cheap but am not aware of their regional accreditation status.

Straighterline doesn't have any accreditation whatsoever. They are a private company that partners with schools like Thomas Edison State College. Other colleges may accept course from SL because they are at least ACE-approved, but you have to make sure before you take any. SL offers enough courses to knock out most of the LL requirements for the BSBA through TESC when combined with ALEKS for math gets you pretty close. You can fill in the rest of the UL classes through Penn Foster, BYU Independent Study and other sources.

Ok, here. I put together this sample degree plan based upon the requirements for the BSBA through TESC (NOTE: these may change somewhat after July 1st, nobody knows for sure until the new catalog comes out then). I make no promises I have this all correct, since I'm used to putting in CLEPs and DSST exams but I think it's pretty close. Use whatever sources work best for you, the following is just an example of how to do this without CLEP or DSST.

A few things to also consider: see if Excelsior Exams, UExcel or TECEP can be taken overseas because they are all accepted by Thomas Edison State College; see this page for more ideas on where to earn credit (I highly recommend that whole site).

    I. General Education Requirements (60)

    A. English Composition (6) - English I & II through Straighterline (SL)

    B. Humanities (12)

Managerial Business Communications (3) - SL Business Communications OR Saylor.org BUS210: Corporate Communications (max $50 for proctor fee)

    Other humanities (9)

Must include at least two subject areas - take 3 courses in humanities through SL.

    C. Social Sciences (12)

    Macroeconomics (3) - SL Economics I

Microeconomics (3) - SL Economics II

Other social sciences (6) - pick 2 more social science courses from SL; consider Saylor.org POLSC201: Introduction to Western Political Thought for one of these course to save money.

Must include at least two subject areas

    D. Natural Sciences and Mathematics (9)

College Algebra or Quantitative Analysis (3) - ALEKS College Algebra ($20/month till finished) OR SL College Algebra

Principles of Statistics (3) - ALEKS Intro to Statistics OR SL Business Statistics

Other natural sciences (3) - SL Intro to Biology

    E. General Education Electives (21) - pick more courses from SL to fill in requirements (history, psychology, Spanish, etc.).

    II. Professional Business Requirements (54)

    A. Business Core (27)
Principles of Finance (3) - Penn Foster College

Business Law (3) - SL Business Law OR Saylor.org BUS205: Business Law and Ethics

Business in Society or International Management (3) - SL Business Ethics

Strategic Management (3) - Penn Foster College

Computer Concepts and Applications/Introduction to Computers/CIS (3) - Not sure on this one since you can't take the CLEP, but perhaps BYU Independent Study SYS 201 or perhaps enough free TEEX courses to satisfy 3 credits.

Introduction to Marketing (3) - BYU BUS M 241: MARKETING MANAGEMENT or Marketing through KCTCS.

Principles of Financial Accounting (3) - SL Accounting I

Principles of Management (3) - SL Principles of Management

Principles of Managerial Accounting (3) - SL Accounting II

    B. Area of Study: BSBA in General Management (18)

SL Managerial Accounting - 3 credits
SL Organizational Behavior - 3 credits

Remaining 12 credits through KCTCS (I think they accept international students) or other online school cheaper than tuition at TESC.

    C. Business Electives (9) - Through KCTCS or other online school cheaper than tuition at TESC.

III. Free Electives (6) - FEMA

    Total - 120
