I have been accepted into NAU (Northern Arizona University)

I have been accepted in NAU's (Northern Arizona University) M.Ed. in Human Relations. I'm excited! I like this program, but I'm keeping my options open.

This program has an option to pursue the degree and a certificate, or solely the degree. The certificate options are:

* Assistive Technology
* Ethnic Studies
* Interdisciplinary Disability Policy and Practice
* Positive Behavior Support
* Public Management
* Women’s and Gender Studies

Question: If I pursue the certificate option, am I able to list the certificate on my CV or Resume? I'm not sure if that is something that is looked as being "shady": Listing a certificate as a separate entity from the degree.

Congratulations. Generally, you would list the certificate until you received the degree and then replace it with the degree assuming they are in the same areas of emphasis. When you list the degree, you would list the option as the specialization. A listed certificate and degree in the same topic from the same school would look cheesy IMO.

 

In most cases, certificates are advantageous. For example, accounting. What is your ultimate career goal? Maybe start by working backwards - research the common qualifications and then decide if a certification will be appropriate. I suspect that combined with a degree, it won't have a negative impact.

 

The degree consist of a minimum of 21 units of educational psychology courses; 30 units are the minimum qualifications for the degree. However, I'm thinking about pursing the Public Management certificate, which substitutes the 9 electives and adds 12 units in organizational-type studies. I feel this would allow me to have a wide-range career potential.
