On-line classes mean no dorm, gym or debt.
“American public higher education faces an unprecedented financial crisis.”
“Some universities are finding a way out of this morass through online classes. Growth in online education is now outpacing traditional enrollments by a wide margin. Why? Because it is well-suited to the needs of an increasing number of learners, extending access and allowing students to both work and study.”

I don’t think many graduate totally debt free without tuition assistance, but a good article for general population in spite of title.

Might be worth noting that the primary author of the quoted article is Jeb Bush, former Governor of Florida, son of former President George HW Bush, brother of former President George W Bush, and possible 2016 Republican presidential candidate.

Might also be worth noting that neither Jeb Bush nor anyone in his immediate family have (as far as I can tell) any first-hand experience with online education.

Before we derail into politics - you did notice my title, didn't you?

"Opinion Article" and (to me) it had more to do with issues (online classes, degrees and expenses) that we discuss on this forum.

It would certainly be possible to read and discuss this particular "Opinion" piece without knowing who wrote it.

But as it happens, this particular "Opinion" is from one of the most prominent political figures in the country.
It just seemed like that fact might be worth mentioning, as it might make it more interesting and relevant for potential readers.

That's the only point I was trying to make. Well, also the point that Gov. Bush has no particular experience with online learning (that I know of). But there are probably few political figures of any party that do.

What's the record for a topic veering off into politics and/or religion, even before the ink dries?

BobbyJim quotes Duffy Daugherty. When I chose Michigan State over Stanford for my PhD, my father said, "You're choosing a school where the two biggest names on campus are "Biggie" and "Duffy"?

If I recall correctly, both Chelsea Clinton and George Bush III will be old enough to run in 2016.

Mine too. Regardless of the candidate, at least the next president can legitimately blame his predecessor for our nation's woes.
