Hi, I have been signed up for UMUC's undergrad computer science program for a couple of weeks now. I wish I did more research in regards to the price, before I settled on UMUC. It's just last month I passed my GED and wanted to hop on the college train as soon as possible. I am rethinking UMUC because of the price, but I will stick with it if need be... I need an online colllege that has a computer science undergrad program that is 100% online, including the development courses (basic math, etc...) Also cheap would be good too. I tried signing up with Franklin University only to find their development courses are not online. I currently live in Indiana but will be moving to Virginia next year. In the area I am going to move to, they have zero computer science programs at their local colleges. So I figured online is the way to go and if things change where I stay in Indiana, I don't have to change schools. So does anyone have any advice on what schools I should look at? Do you have any experince with the ones you suggest? Also if I do decide to change schools - I already accepted my financial aid awards at UMUC. How would that work? Would it be easier just to take the classes I signed up for in the spring and just transfer? Thanks! Jessie
Fort Hays State University: BS Information Networking & Telecommunications Computer Networking ($522 /3-hour course) Information Networking & Telecommunications (Computer Networking) - Fort Hays State University Wayne State College: Undergraduate Computer Sci. ($210 /credit hour) Academic Programs
Since you're moving to Virginia, you may want to try Old Dominion University. They have an online B.S. in Computer Science and I believe the entire program is offered 100% online.
FSU Computer Science / Online Programs / Academics / Panama City Campus / FSU - Panama City Campus I spoke with Dr. Steve Leech many times about this program 4 years ago and he is a very helpful person. I agree though, check out your state schools first. If you want a program that accepts tons of CLEP credits though, consider Thomas Edison State College. Thomas Edison State College: Computer Science TESC is not ABET accredited, however I am a software developer by trade and ABET is much less important in the software industry than in traditional engineering. In fact, computer science doesn't exist for many of us. Its more about software engineering, application development, IT etc. I don't write algorithms, I write business applications and user interfaces. Its just a different animal. If you don't know what CLEP credits are, please read the following : Degree Forum Wiki You can save many years and many thousands of dollars by reading REA books on CLEP topics, taking practice tests, and then taking the $80 CLEP exam to get college credit in the subject. I have personally taken about 15 of these tests.
Thanks for the replies, I will probably try and get into ODU for the summer semester. I wish I thought of that school before I signed up for UMUC. Does anyone know how transferable UMUC's credits are? I will only have 6 by the time I go to ODU but still...I want them to count if they can. I am excited! The funny thing is, I use to live near ODU and probably would have ended up going there if I hadn't moved. - Jessie -
