I need a Ph.D. in History (working on my masters now). I have looked into places like UNISA but a little apprehensive on what their reputation might be among U.S. academia. Therefore, I wish to know if there are any universities in the U.K. I can get a Ph.D. by publication (or some other form of distance Ed)

A PhD by publication is not a form of distance education. It would be closer to prior learning assessment.

If you now, right now, have a cogent string of published articles, you might want to explore that option. If you do not, then you are a student and not really someone who would do a Ph.D. in that fashion.

    PhD by public work.

In UK If you have work(s) on a single or predominant theme or topic already in the public domain (journal articles, books, reports, software, artistic works etc) these works can form the core of your submission for a PhD by Public Work.

    Research degrees

This is meant mainly for distinguished scholars and subject matter experts with a wealth of published work.
