If a person has a doctorate and goes back to college for a masters degree, then should he wear his doctoral regalia or the masters regalia at the graduation ceremony for the masters degree?

I was told you wear the regalia that was your highest degree earned...

I don't know these rules but that makes sense to me.

For graduation you wear the regalia of the degree which you are graduating with - on most other formal occasions the doctoral regalia would be more appropriate

I would think that you would wear the regalia of the degree you're graduating with.

Usually it depends on the institution that you are graduating, some allow and some do not. I would recommend you to wear your Doctorate regalia with your graduating institutional consent. Just send an email to your school's dean for approval; since it is an academic ceremony, I don't see any problem.

I agree with Ted. In any future ceremonies, you would obviously wear the robes for the higher degree.

Some say yes and some say no. Hummmm....

Speculation: There probably isn't a formal codified answer and it may left be up to each institution or the person to decide?

I was not able to find anything in writing on the internet concerning this issue.

I'd wear whichever one has the coolest and most irritating hat! :)

If you were a solider who later joined the navy, you wouldn't pass out from the naval academy wearing an army uniform - you wear the gown and hood for the degree you are graduating with

Of course, the Academic Costume Code is not binding on any person or institution. The guidelines make sense, but indvidual universities are free to mandate different academic dress for their own ceremonies. For those interested in American academic dress, there was an issue of the Burgon Society's Transactions recently that was devoted to North American traditions. I'm sure one can pick up a copy on their website still.

    Peace,

I think I'll have to agree with TEKMAN. It will depend on the institution you are graduating with.
I was advised to wear Master's academic regalia. At first, I was terribly disappointed because I don't have that much time to prepare and buy for a new one.
Good thing, the university did all the responsibility of buying the academic regalia. I think it was from Gradshop. Anyways, I recently graduated last month and this was an interesting scenario that I can relate to.

    It's not important.
