    Great! :cool2:

Seriously, I am really impressed and I wish you all the best with your UNISA PhD. It is not easy at all to manage a busy working life, a young family and demanding studies at doctoral level! What is the topic of your research, if I may ask?

Can someone in the know tell me if its possible to earn a PhD in business administration from UNISA? I only see D.Comm, D.Admin. on the website.

D.Comms and D.Admins are equivalent to American PhDs. The DBL is equivalent to the American DBA.

D.Comms and D.Admins are dissertation only and require a previous degree in business Administration.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, I meant within UNISA.

Conceivably you could do this through their School of Economics and Management or through their School of Human Sciences. In the former case it might be a DCom in Business and in the latter case a PhD in something like Sociology. I could see it happening in either way.

Thanks Kizmet. PhD would be my preference. Is there a reason why UNISA bypassed PhD and DBA nomenclatures for its business degrees in favour of the less common (dare I say, controversial) DComm and DAdmin?

It's an old school from a very different culture. If anything, I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often.

Indeed it is! Unisa is older than Washington State University, the alma mater of the condescending and confused academic in the original post.

UNISA is also the alma mater of quite a few well-known activists and (international) politicians. Most note-worthy would probably be Nelson Mandela... and I'm sure that WSU has had it's share of well-known graduates too. I'd say just bring up that fact without being competitive, and let it be. I'm interested in hearing how he/she reacts.

Doctor of Commerce or Doctor of Administration are not unusual in the British Commonwealth. They are usually professionally, not academically orientated. PhD's are viewed as a degree for university researchers, not so much for professional practice.
