I love people and have a number of very good friends. However, at heart, I'm an introvert. I was wondering if DI attracted that kind of person over those who are more extroverted. How do you view yourself.

Don't know what you are? One definition I have read is that introverts get their batteries charged by spending time alone and extroverts get their energy from being with people. While this may not be the best definition, it serves my purpose because I am interested in your perceptions, not textbook examples.

My hypothesis is that a significant majority of regular DI members view themselves as introverts to one extent or another.

(Don't worry, voting on this poll will not reveal your identity or force you to interact with people in any way )

Ditto on the post. Although I like to hang around with friends, alone time is always welcomed.

Your definition is the standard definition along with how you process information, meetings and the like. If you process information on the outside, on the fly, you may be an extrovert or if you think everything through internally, and then maybe express your thoughts out loud, you may be an introvert. As with anything it is never black and white. There are many other factors that can go in to mis-indentifying someone as one or the other, a large one being confidence, or lacking the acceptance of people. We all need acceptance, when it is perceived that we are not getting it, we tend to be more reserved. You would then identify yourself as an introvert, because you are expelling energy when with people, and are able to replenish while alone. If you are in a group where you feel pleasant because you are accepted, it could be the exact opposite.

I have thought many hours about this because as part of the course we teach we do a personality assessment on the first day. We are pretty good about watching people and getting a good idea about personality factors but there is so much more that goes in to personality, behaviors exhibited that may be contrary to our personality (extrovert, but shy so appears to be introverted) and an infinite number of other things.

So, I think connecting with people in any capacity would still be connecting with people.

Introversion and sociability are related concepts, but are actually different facets of personality. Introverted people have elevated levels of prefrontal cortical activity compared to extroverts. The theory is that introverts, like me, already have so much racing through our minds that it doesn't take much external stimulus to overwhelm us. True that. I hate loud music and bright flashing lights. Conversely, extroverts have less racing through their minds (not necessarily reflecting on levels of intelligence, although on the whole introverts to fare better on tests of cognitive ablilities) and therefore need and seek out external stimuli to fill the gap.

Interoversion/extroversion might affect sociability but do not necessarily dominate it. I'm highly sociable- one of the greatest joys in my life is hosting dinner and game gatherings at my place for friends. It's just that I feel more comfortable in smaller groups, dancing to softer music and going out to less crowded and loud venues.

That makes a lot of sense, MC. You and I are a lot alike.

I must be empty headed, because I am about as extroverted as they come.

I guess this would help explain why I feel I don't do so well on tests... but give me a paper to write and I'll enjoy expressing my thoughts and ideas. :)

Surf, I'm sure you know this but hypothesis typically have an if/then statement, such as:

If you don't mind being alone and you are willing to spend enough time to become well known on Degree Info (DI) and enjoy online discussions rather than face-to-face discussion, then it's estimated that you are, like many others on DI, naturally introverted.

I'm just picking at your verbiage, because studying psychology it helping me to structure my thinking abilities (plus I would get docked if I ever gave my hypothesis like this, hehe).

Thanks for the constructive criticism. However, not all hypotheses offer an if/then relationship. (I don't know the field of psychology, so maybe they do there) In the field of education I work in, I have developed a number of research proposals offering a hypothesis that was different than you suggest. Most of mine involved a sample exhibiting a statistically significant difference to a control group or one variable having a covariance with another. Don't worry, you won't ever get docked on Degree Info

I didn't vote because I'm both. Introverted in large groups, extroverted in small groups.
