Do Americans like Obamacare?

  1. Ouch, I gues I'm supposed to feel insulted. Try again, better luck next time. Given that I made sure include the phrase "Personally..." I'm not sure how I gave you the impression that I do (or even hold myself out to) speak for everyone. If that's the impression that I have given you then I apologize because that's not the case.

Yes, in the video they did state that. In your comment you made no reference to the video saying that. That gave me the impression that you were not only repeating what the video was saying but were expressing your own viewpoint. I thought that you felt as if "Americans overall do not like the healthcare law". If I am wrong then please correct me. If that's how you feel then that's perfectly fine. To each their own. So just as you expressed your viewpoint, I expressed mine.

As we have aptly demonstrated, the original question was poorly formulated. There is no single group that can be labeled "Americans." We are lucky enough to live in a place and a time where disagreement and dissent is not only allowed but is encouraged. Instead of being at each other for this disagreement we should be glad for it because it keeps us all on our toes and helps us to think clearly and honestly. I would be much more afraid of living in a place where everyone agrees.

The least popular item in the plan is the individual mandate, which very few seem to realize doesn't apply to lower income people. I only learned that myself the other day, and I try my best to keep up with all this stuff.

  4. Wow, that's interesting. I learn something new everyday.

Polling shows 51% dissapprove, 43% approve. I'm personally not a fan. Has anyone else heard about this stipulation that beginning in 2014, 3% of a home sale goes to the gov't to fund this financial black hole? Guess that's one way to artificially raise home prices...

The Supreme Court just rules (6-3) that the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) is constitutional.

Really? :hypnotized: Given how untrustworthy both the politicians and the media are, one would have to read all of the thousands of pages of the bill to finally have an idea of what it really says.

Well, good news for some people and bad news for others. Kind of like every other thing in our system. Some are for it and some are not and then we move on. We'll see how this shakes out now that it will be implemented. I think Obama just sealed up his second term, I hope he does better the second time around.

If I am reading it correctly, SCOTUS basically says that Obamacare is a tax.

I vaguely remember all the dialogue when this was being signed into law stating that it specifically was not a tax.

  12. Pretty interesting ruling. I thought the mandate would have been struck down. If I recall correctly, four of the Justices upheld it based on the Commerce Clause. Chief Justice Roberts is the only judge that upheld it as a tax.

When it was created it was mentioned as “not a tax”.

Taxes are fine I guess. If we really want to fix things (and keep our social programs) then everyone's taxes should go up including the middle class. What would be nice is if we could cut some spending while we're at it; DoD, Medicare/Medicaid, Duplicative .Gov programs, cut way down on aid to foreign countries, etc.

  14. 03310151, that makes to much sense. :) Heck that sounds like it would actually work. :arms:

    Correction: The vote was 5-4.

I'm always amazed that so many of the courts decisions have a 5 and 4 split. Are the items brought to them always borderline being constitutional or not; or is is that their near unanimous votes are not reported by the media.

This is an exerpt from an email I just received:

"The Justices ruled that states may opt out of the law’s Medicaid expansion without losing federal Medicaid funds. However, if a state opts out, it could lose millions in additional federal funding that would have covered newly eligible residents up to 133 percent of the federal poverty level, or about $30,000 for a family of four. Sara Rosenbaum, health policy professor at George Washington University, said she expects "the overwhelming number of states" to adopt the Medicaid expansion. "The pressure to participate will be enormous from health care providers and communities," she said. "The majority of states will not want to have its poorest residents without coverage.”

I have a sinking suspicion that this will benefit the rich and the powerful more than me and mine. I'm just a middle class man working to provide for my wife and kids. I see no representation of what I want in most elections and as trite as it sounds I'm afraid there is not much difference between liberal/conservative D's and R's.

I'm no anarchist rising up in the streets or some bored kid protesting "wall street" whatever the hell that means. But, and this really has nothing to do with healthcare, I feel a certain sense of doom about our politicians these days. Bush/Clinton/Bush/Obama/Whoever to me, there really is not much difference. And that is sad.

I'm struggling to teach my kids about our country. What it means to be an American. What it means to be a man. What it means to stand for something and have your words and actions mean something.

    Numb.

We all feel unrepresented at times. If I had to talk to your kids, anyone's kids, about what it means to be an American I'd talk to them about fairness. They probably already know that life is not always fair and we all take our lumps. I'd talk to them about how democracy is a process, not an outcome. Just like justice is a process, not an outcome. Teach your kids to know and understand what's going on in their world and that they can have a hand in it if they want. Finally, teach them to look hard beyond the bullshit. The real story is very often hard to find.
