    Re: why to point ACCIS

    :)

Hi Sanjay, I'm comp-sci-guy. I'm also a student at ACCIS and I think their program is fantastic. I agree with you that their course is very challenging. Simply put, IT'S HELL!! It is by no means easy.
I think it's better than some traditional colleges and universities. But you know, I find it amazing that people who have lambasted this school have never either been a student there or check out their curiculum. I would invite them to check them out before they start shooting off at the mouth. Incidentally, I'm a beginning student in their Computer Science program. I'll be finish in 2 years. Just my 2 cents.

    Hi comp-sci-guy

As you know from the previous posts ACCIS has a questionable ethical reputation. I am pretty sure you also realize it only has DETC accreditation which is very second rate in the U.S. If a person wants to get a second degree or at some point teach it could be very limiting. Since there are low cost RA programs in CS, CIS and IT available why did you make the decision to go to ACCIS and limit yourself?

Dave, have you taken the time to call the school and check out their course content? You seem so quick to judge based on accreditation. I like their program. It's very intense. You also speak of other low cost RA programs in CS. I look at it like this: you get what you paid for. Just my opinion.

    Hi comp-sci-guy

My question was what reason did you choose to enroll at ACCIS? I don't think it was reputation, accreditation or utility. Was it course content, advertising or ? How did you check out the school before enrolling? When I mention low cost RA options I am suggesting qualty as good or better than ACCIS with much better utility. IF ACCIS meets your needs I am happy for you. It is just hard to imagine it being the best choice for any informed consumer.

'Since there are low cost RA programs in CS, CIS and IT"

    Name them, please.

    Regards,

    Bill

PS if you know any low cost RA engineering technology DL degrees too I would appreciate it! (minus the credit banking colleges ala excelsior etc. the only way I see excelsior being cheap for a BS is if you get a BS in CLEP testingology. <g>

Dave, of everybody I've talked to who's enrolled in ACCIS, I have NOT heard one complaint. NOT ONE!! It seems to me that the people who are complaining and putting the school down are those who are NOT students and never checked out the course content, such as yourself. Like I said before, don't knock it until you tried it. It may be the best thing for you. Just my opinion.

    Hi comp-sci-guy

I did not and am not addressing class quality. It may be great it may be horrible. From their reputation my guess is it is ok but mediocre. With their reputation I have no interest in their program. I think you have over looked my questions to you so I will repost them.

"My question was what reason did you choose to enroll at ACCIS? I don't think it was reputation, accreditation or utility. Was it course content, advertising or ? How did you check out the school before enrolling? "

If by not answering them you are saying you are enrolled at ACCIS for education and will never use the degree for employment then you may have a valid argument. Since you could gain the education easily with self study that may be a better choice. It would certainly be lower cost.

You seem like an earnest student and as I said before if an ACCIS program meets your needs and is the best choice for you great! It will take quite a bit of defending over the next few decades so you should probably get use to the task. Good luck in your path.

  8. I won't be trying it.. nothing to do with their accreditation or their past, I just have little aptitude or interest in that particular field. But I certainly have friends & co-workers who might be interested, so let me second Dave's questions:

    1. WHY was it the best "thing" for you, as opposed to other choices (be they RA, other accreditation, or unaccredited?) Cost? Convenience? Something completely intangible? Something else?

    2. Assuming that ACCIS is the best choice for you, did you consider other programs/options in making that choice? Any particular ones?

(I'm not baiting.. I promise. Genuine curiosity.)

    Hi Bill

The number of RA choices are vast and I am only familiar with some. The computer related degrees I am most interested in are as follows

    Troy State Uninversity CS
RA, State program, accepts CLEP and DANTES, low cost, true Computer Science major
    http://www.tsufl.edu/distancelearning/advisor/Bachelor%20of%20Science%20Computer%20Science.htm

    Univ. of Mass. Lowell IT
RA, State program, accepts CLEP and DANTES, low cost (dl program charges in-state rates for out of state students), great reputation, feedback from students is it is a great program
    http://cybered.uml.edu/cy_BSonline.htm

Univ. of Maryland IS Management, CIS, and Computer Studies
RA, State program, accepts CLEP and DANTES, medium cost (out of state students pay much higher tuition), great reputation

Ft Hays State University General Studies with a concentration in Computer Networking and Telecommunications
RA, State program, may accept CLEP and DANTES, low cost, faculty seems to have a good contacts in the industry
which could easy lead to a nice job, program can include cisco training
    http://web.fhsu.edu/universitycatal...ecommunications

    Excelsior College CIS
RA, accepts all CLEP and DANTES, lowest cost, very good reputation, requires the most self discipline and is best for those with industry experience and certifications
    http://www.excelsior.edu/tec_home.htm

    Regis University Computer Networking
RA, Jesuit program, designed in conjunction with Sun (the makers of Java programing lang. and Solaris OS), Higher cost but if you have tuition reimbursement not an issue, great reputation and excellent program

University of Washington Computing and Software Systems
RA, State program of the highest calibur, medium cost, programming focus, school has an excellent reputation
    http://www.outreach.washington.edu/...am/overview.asp

    University of London
Non-RA but a GAAP school of the highest reputation, haven't had time to thoroughly check out program

Also of interest but further down the list for me
    NJIT
    City University
    Park University
    Franklin University
    Limstone College
    Western Governors University
    Strayer University
    Rogers State University
    Bakers College
    Jones International University

Again this is not an exhaustive list but the lowest cost ones that have captured my interest the most. All are RA with good to great reputations with the exception of U of London. I keep thinking about writing a detailed web page to show all the choices but at present it will have to wait. I would include a DETC school but only if it had an exceptional reputation. Also as far as CLEP tests I see self study and testing as a totally valid method. If it is good enough for Univ of London and Heriot Watt I can also accept it. I think Excelsior, COSC and TESC are best for an older adult or someone with industry experience. They would not be my first choice for the average 18 year old. I hope this is of help. Remember whatever choice you make you will be living with for decades.

    Touro U

Touro University International, a branch campus of Touro College in New York as a fairly new BSCS program which can be done completely at a distance.

In the military? You can complete this degree for $75. :D

Read all about it at http://www.tourou.edu.

    Kind regards,
