    Respected Esteemed Forum Members/Moderators,

Most Respectfully, I am Aspen DSc Computer Science student, got enrolled in July last year. I have completed 18 credits. I got 9 credits transferred from my ongoing DBA(ISERM - 57 Credits done) from CalUniversity. I hope to graduate with DBA from CalUniversity in next couple of months.

I have RA Masters & Bachelors in Software Engineering & Computer Science respectively.

I was anticipating that esteemed forum members can reflect on my DL journey so far. If there are any enrolled Aspen's DSc members, they can very well chip in!

    regards

Why are you getting a DSc? What are your plans? New job? Promotion? Teaching? Fun?

You should be telling us about the program since you're enrolled. What do you think of it so far?

What do you think about the DBA program at CalUniversity? I am interested in the healthcare admin track?

Best of luck in pursuing your D.Sc. in computer science! Looks impressive but way out of my league!

I am currently computer science Faculty at Private University in India. I am Assistant Professor with 10 years teaching experience. I hope DSc may allow me to get Associate Professorship at same or some other Indian University.

    Kindly comment on my expectations!

I am doing pretty fine. The text books for courses are same as being used for any B&M school. The assignments/case problems do allow lot of flexibility for innovative thought. I think it is helping me to further develop independent perspective in my area.

But it might happen that I have some prior experience with research writing. I have over dozen publications in international conferences & journals.

I started CalUniversity's DBA programme when they were offering Essay scholarship. I saved a bit on that in 2009. I will be graduating with DBA in Information Systems by end of this may. The programme was fine, the best part was prompt & 24hr/7week support & assistance by administration & Faculty. I think the cost of programme rose since then & it may be well over $15K at this instance.

Please verify with your University if this degree would be acceptable in India. It is not acceptable to be an assistant professor in the US at most Universities. I work in Canada and it wouldn't be accepted here either.

You are getting a degree that is at the bottom of the bottom. It won't be respected in the academic community and it won't add credibility to your existing credentials.

If money is a concern, I would suggest looking at the University of South Africa instead. UNISA is respected in the academic community and there are many people working in the world with this credential as an assistant professor.

I realize that some people think that an American degree would add instant credibility to a resume but bear in mind that in the US there is a huge difference between a Harvard (top) and Aspen (at the rock bottom).

I would only do this degree if I was self employed and wanted to impress prospect clients with a doctorate. This type of degrees are not meant for people looking for academic careers or improve profiles for employment with a fortune 500 company. This type of programs are normally followed by established professionals that only need to fill a gap in the resume and already have proven records so employers wouldn't really look at the education so closely.

Not my intention, I'm sorry if I did.

I have been in the distance education business for about 12 years. I have taught at many schools in the US, Canada and Europe and just wanted to give you my two cents.

I have seen many people that invest money in credentials that are virtually useless all the time.

You don't have to take my word, if you know any professor that teach in the US, just ask if this degree would be respected and you will get your answer.

Again, I'm sorry if this sounded like a personal attack.

    Respected RFValve,

Immense thanks for pulling me up through. This comprehensively demonstrates your statesmanship.

Sir, I was counting DSc on following:

Cost : I availed Aspen's Discounted Option ( < $7,000) , I belongs to lower middle class Family for India.Programmes from NCU, Capella, Walden & Phoenix are out of my reach.

Legality : I thought a legal Doctorate might be better than no Doctorate. I may not get any opportunity to Pursue Doctorate in my entire life yet again.

Indian Market : Immense dearth of Doctorates in India, Since Indian education Industry are booming like any thing. Lot of Doctorates needed to fill higher positions.

In case I apply for Faculty position with a Doctorate at any Institution in India. There is even a greater probability that I may not face any competition as there will be no other candidate with a Doctorate.

    Kindly instruct Sir!

I don't have experience with the Indian market but my advice would be to contact local schools and verify that Aspen satisfy your needs before you spend more money in this credentiall.

The degree has no use for academic work in the US but it doesn't mean that Indian Universities won't accept it.

Although it might have some use in the academia in India, you also have to think about your reputation as a reseacher. In general, it is safe to say that the degree won't be respected in the academic circles.

I realize that money is a concern so my advice is to look for academic options from the University of South Africa. Many academics around the world hold a credential from this University and it is considered a respected institution. Tuition fees might be close to Aspen.

Finally, check the thread in the business degrees area that talk about the financial situation of Aspen. It seems that there is a good chance that the school will go out of business and you will end with a degree from a dead school.

There are so many Open Universities in India offering PhD's at 1/20 th pf Aspen's cost. Moreover NA degrees are not recognized in India as equivalent to UGC/AICTE accredited degrees. You might get fired from the job if somebody complains to the school you are working in the future. Indian UGC/AICTE accredited degrees are respected as similar to Regionally Accredited Degrees in USA.

My impression is that many people from India think that any doctorate from the US is better than an Indian Doctorate.

The American education system is prestigious as it has the best Universities of the world. This can mislead some people and make them believe that any degree from the US would be perceived as superior.

In this case of our friend, I thnk your advice is sound. It is better to get a PhD from an Indian Institution that would no blow in your face and a cheaper cost.

The gentleman from India has already completed 1/3 of the D.Sc. from Aspen so why not finish?
