I'm guessing that there are income qualifications to receive such benefits. It seems only logical that if your income crosses the upper threshold then you would be disqualified. How could it be otherwise?

Of course not. It is, however, enough to live on to go back to school to get an appropriate education to increase your employment opportunities....without food stamps.

It may not be much of a surprise to most members to discover that I'm a fairly liberal democrat. This is based primarily on social issues, not fiscal issues. However, here at the intersection of social and fiscal I find myself curiously conservative. I've never taken a penny of the public's money, always worked to support myself, always paid my taxes and always felt that we who can support ourselves should share the burden of supporting those who can not support themselves (not simply those who will not). I know that "welfare" has become institutionalized to some degree but I have to admit that I do not understand the mindset of the person who believes that others should support them throughout their lives. Once upon a time I read a book(s) about the general concept of the "social contract." It was Locke or Rousseau or maybe both. There were some interesting ideas, and many that I adhere to but giving someone enough money to live on just because they don't feel like working wasn't one of them. Also, as long as I'm on my soapbox, I would not be opposed to a system such as is used in Israel where everyone is expected to spend time in the military or otherwise serving the country.

And just so that I can tip the balance back the other way, I also think that Rush Limbaugh is an ass and his apology is 100% insincere.

I visited Germany in the early 90s and their draft system was explained to be as this. I may have the exact numbers wrong but hopefully you get the idea. It was 18 months military service or 24 months national service. National service meant driving an ambulance in an underserved area or maybe being a teacher's aide or something along those lines. The thought was that everyone would select NS because it was easier so the extra time was added to dissuade the slackers while still accommodating genuine conscientious objectors. It seemed to work for them. It also seemed the NS was becoming the hip way to go.

You and I are strikingly similar in some ways. I also have never taken a penny from any kind of welfare or student aid. I have paid for my education out of pocket in a "pay as you go" fashion. That's how I was raised.

Having said that, I do believe in programs that help those that TRULY need it. For example the disabled, tragedy victims and the elderly. Not everyone can simply "lift themselves up by their bootstraps". I do think young women should not be rewarded for popping kids out their wombs beyond a certain amount of children. One is a mistake, two three, six, eight? Oh hells no!

So I do believe in welfare programs with certain caveats.

As far as Rush? I think he is preverted freak who wants to watch young women having sex. Sick.

    Gotta run,

P.S. Kiz, next month I am having a Japanese quarter sleeve dragon chest plate done. It's going to take several sessions. The first step is to obviously do the outline, which will take hours and hours. I am having a Japanese art expert do it, who is tied to the oldest tattoo parlors in the Country.

Invest it in solid dividend stocks lets say utilities with $700k aiming for a dividend yield of 3.5% which is quite easy with prudent choices the income would be $24,500 a year. Live on lets say $18,375 of that and reinvest the remainder in a Roth-IRA the taxes on the principle will be low being entirely stock equity. She may have to move to a lower cost of living area but I know lots of people living on that and less in modesty well.

She doesn't need food stamps just to many here seem to live in what I would call a well of lifestyle you give me that kind of money I could make a go of it.

And she would have $70k to go to school, could work part-time if she wanted to and make a nice life for herself its just common sense not rocket science.
