I have to take one of these two tests by the end of June 2012 as a condition to my acceptance into Adams State Clinical Mental Health program. So my question is for those of you who have taken either please chime on experience and test questions etc...The only thing I am worried about is the math section because it is my weakest subject.

If you had the option which would you choose and why?

Both test scores are good for 5 years. Are you thinking about another degree after this one? Most MA/MS programs require the GRE and most MBA programs require the GMAT. Depending on future goals, you might pick the more appropriate exam now so you don't have to take an exam again later.

Nope no more degrees after this one for me and ASC accepts either the GRE or the MAT so I can chose which one I take. I am just not sure which one to take!

I've taken both. The GRE is more versatile, but if you're that sure you won't need it again, the Miller is faster, cheaper, and (for those who aren't excited about math) easier.

The MAT is better for someone who is not a math aficionado. I took it a couple of years ago and found that is was not that tough. It's more like an IQ test than others because you are given questions that must be answered with logic. If fact, I remember running across some websites a few years ago that translate MAT scores into approximate IQ scores. Go for the MAT.

    No math on the MAT.
I love the MAT. But be sure you study up on your Greek and Roman mythology because unless they've changed it, there's a lot of analogies about them.

Considering MAT stands for Miller Analogies Test, that shouldn't be surprising.

I disagree. A test of analogies doesn't necessary have to include any references to Greek and Roman mythology.

Disagree all you want. There were lots both times I took it, first in the 70s and then in the 90s.

Please re-read what I wrote. My point was not that the MAT has no references to mythology.

My point is that the name "Miller Analogies Test" does not imply anything about mythology. The MAT, of course, does include mythology questions, but "analogies test" as a name implies nothing about mythology. Analogy questions can be written about any subject, including mathematics. The only thing implied by the name of the test is that it consists of analogies.

    Mat

Go with the MAT! It's cheaper and faster! Buy a used MAT prep book from Barron's or Princeton Review from Amazon.com
I took it over 10 years ago but I remember I scored 79% reading through the guide 1x to get an idea about the style of exam and the way questions were asked. The school I attended only required a 32%!

For example, 1:5 as Washington is to
    a. Lincoln
    b. Hamilton
    c. Jackson
    d. Grant

answer is a. Washington is on the 1 dollar bill and Lincoln is on the $5 bill.
(Read the question 1 is to 5 as Washington is to Lincoln)

You have to have an abstract reasoning type mind but it is doable and schools usually have a minimum cutoff score!

PS: I think they changed the way they report scores since I took it but you get the idea.

I took the GRE about 20+ years ago and the only thing I remember is holding a number 2 pencil and wasting the better part of a day. The MAT took about 2 hours.

I have taken both. MAT is easier and faster and cheaper. That is an unbeatable combination for me. If the school will accept either one, and you have no plans to need another entrance exam in the next 5 years, then go with the MAT.

I never mentioned mythology, I was referring to the poster who said to expect a lot of analogies on the Miller Analogies Test, which I thought should be fairly obvious.

    TEKMAN Semper Fi!

As CDHALE has said, MAT is easier, faster, and cheaper; however, most schools don't accept MAT. If you have that option, then go for it.

You were quoting a poster who said there were a lot of analogies referring to Greek and Roman mythology, so it seemed to me that you were referring to his statement. It does seem that all of the wires in this thread have been sufficiently crossed.

Carry on, everyone! Nothing to see here :D.

Bruce, I said to expect analogies about Greek and Roman mythologies, not analogies in general. It seemed better than referring to them as "questions" as they really aren't questions.
I can't believe how difficult this is. Next time I won't bother.

Seems the consensus is to take the MAT and I was leaning towards that for the lack of the Math portion! Now I get to study for the next few months because I don't have to have it taken until June 2012 and I feel I need some prep! The good thing is I sent an email and asked about scores and the response was what they wanted but that if I don't get the best score I will be required to take 1 extra class. So even if I don't do well I will be okay. I expect to do great :)

    Thanks for all the replies!
