Does anyone know any online doctor of physical therapy programs?

Any other online programs to become a doctor or medical field worker of some sort?

How would an online PT program even work in your mind? The school mails you some cadaver knees and you get to manipulate them at the kitchen table on your own time? Just curious, because I am pretty sure I would want any physical therapist working on me to have actually attended a class or two.

Shawn - You asked for a doctoral program in PT. Surely you understood that you'd need to have a solid background in PT in order to be admitted into a doctoral program. Do you have a background in any medical field?

 

Likewise that was my understanding as regards the OPs request.

 

The new entry level credential to be a PT is the doctoral degree, believe it or not. He's needs an undergraduate degree in but not in physical therapy. Used to be a master's program but naturally they have to increase the cost and amount of time required to become a physical therapist in order to increase the amount of money the schools make and the PTs charge the insurance companies. Another example of credentials creep.

The transitions programs are so current PTs can upgrade themselves.

I agree that you're not going to find the non-transitional program online since there's too much clinical and hands-on stuff involved.

 

OK, I don't believe it. You can become a licensed Physical Therapist with a Bachelors degree (plus experience and and exam, etc. Here's my proof:

I'd like you to show us the law that say you have to have a PhD in order to become a licensed Physical Therapist.

 

Yes, you can still get licensed, but the movement is toward the doctorate as the entry level requirement. Just like back in the day when pharmacists were 5 year bachelor's degrees and gradually the Pharm.D. became the entry level degree. It doesn't happen over night, but it happens. That's why it's called creep.

I could go on but the list is too long. Just type "physical therapy doctorate entry level" into google to get the long, long list of schools touting their entry level doctorates in PT.

 

My prediction: It'll never happen. You can become an RN without even a Bachelors degree but you need a PhD in order to become a licensed, practicing Physical Therapist? There's not a single health care profession (including MDs) with standards that high. It'll never happen. The APTA can have all the visions they want but AFAIC they're just hallucinating. This is true not just because it's crazy and unrealistic, it's true because licensure is controlled by the individual 50 states, not APTA.

 

It's not a Ph.D. It's a professional doctorate like the J.D., Pharm.D., Ed.D, O.D. It's all part of the credential creep. If you google as I said above you'll see all the schools have switched to it because that's what the professional association says they should do. And it is happening. The PTs at the PT place I went all had the doctorate, and they had several interns from the local program.

 

The move has already started. In California, for instance, there were so many bachelor's and master's degree programs until a few years ago. Now, almost all bachelor's programs are gone and the master's degree programs are on their way out. A friend of mine in Cal State Northridge's master's program said that talks are ongoing regarding the phase out of their program in preparation for the switch to the doctoral program. When I was confined at Glendale Memorial Hospital for five weeks a few months ago, ALL the five different PTs who treated me were aware of the forthcoming changes (apparently, it's "news" among practicing PTs), with three of them saying that they were going to upgrade their credentials by pursuing the DPT ("just a few more courses plus research")...

 

Also, while licensure is controlled by individual states, states will not issue licences to graduates of PT programs not accredited by APTA's Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (APTA - Accredited PT and PTA Programs).

 

OK guys, I guess I got it wrong because it hasn't happened in my neighborhood. Sorry for the argument.

To be admitted into a DPT program, you need a bachelor degree in anything plus specific lab-based science courses and a good GRE score. Below is a typical requirement for entry into DPT (transitional DPT is for licenced PTs with master or bachelors degree):

The following courses (in semester credit-hours) or their equivalents are minimum prerequisites for entry into the Doctor of Physical Therapy program:

General biology with lab (8)
General chemistry with lab (8)
One additional biology or chemistry course with lab (4). This must be a 200-level or higher course such as Organic Chemistry with lab (CHEM 322/323), Cell Biology with lab (BIOL 370/371), or Human Physiology I and II with lab (BIOL 444/445/446/447)
Anatomy with lab (4-8); two semester sequence of 100-level Human Anatomy and Physiology with lab (8) OR one semester of 200-level or higher with lab (4) such as Comparative Anatomy (BIOL 360/361)
General Physics with lab (8) (PHYS 352/353 and PHYS 362/363)
Statistics (3) (STAT 520)
Medical Terminology (1) (HLSC 550) or Computer Application: Medical Terminology for the Health Professional (OCCT 400)

Special Admission Requirements

In addition to meeting university admissions criteria, applicants must: have a bachelor's degree, any major, with a minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale; achieve a minimum of 1,000 points combined on the verbal reasoning and quantitative reasoning sections of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE); and have appropriate prerequisite course work with a minimum prerequisite G.P.A. of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
