I am looking for a distance options or minimal residency (one week per semester) in a Economics PhD program. Are there any institutions that offer one...I really prefer it to come from university that also has a campus location and not Walden or any other for profit school.

    Thank you.

Economics PhD - Doctoral Online Degree - SMC University

Steve Forrester, a long-time member of this forum, briefly attended this program. Perhaps he can chime in here and provided some info regarding the school and his decision to leave the program.

I would also check out South African and Australian schools.

    Best of luck

Briefly attended? Did he drop from the program?

To the best of my knowledge there is not a single US DL PhD program in Economics. You might be able to tweak a Business PhD/DBA in the direction of Economics though. Otherwise, as the esteemed Japhy said, check UNISA, check the usual suspects in Australia and check here:

    Hi Dan,

SMC is for-profit, and while they have residencies, it's not a campus based school, so you'll probably nix them just for those reasons. They're also unsuitable for Americans who are interested in using the degree to teach, since SMC isn't institutionally accredited -- it's true that most of their programs are accredited by ACBSP, but not the PhD in Economics.

As for why I left, it was nothing against the school or the program, which I would still recommend to those whose goals are compatible with the program's limitations. I just realized that I didn't have four years of sustainable interest in economics, so I went back to find a doctoral program in higher education, where I belong.

Thank you all...if I decide to go the Business PhD route and tweak it towards economics does anyone know any good programs that meet my original criteria of "prefer it to come from university that also has a campus location and not Walden or any other for profit school"
