I've thought about getting a degree in criminal justice as I am interested in criminal law but don't want to be a cop. What careers are open to CJ degree holders besides security and law enforcement? All responses are appreciated.

Besides the obvious (police, sheriff, corrections), I've seen people with CJ degrees as probation officers, parole officers, public safety dispatchers, victim/witness advocates, court clinicians, assistant court clerks, and mental health workers.

If you earn a RA graduate CJ degree and have been admitted to the Bar, then you'd also be very marketable to teach undergraduate CJ courses.

I've known quite a few CJ degree holders who work as investigators for agencies within federal and state departments of labor (Wage & Hour Division, Employment Standards Administration, etc.) and human rights agencies.

It fills the square for jobs that require a bachelor's degree in anything.

I love how most of the stuff listed was still in the CJ field.

Well, naturally, but as airtorn mentioned, a CJ degree is as good as any other major for a job that requires any regionally-accredited degree.

I used to have a plant manager who was a CJ degree holder. How he wound up in business is beyond me but it worked for him. No one cared for him but he made the company money.

I know a few people who were CJ majors who found out it's not as easy to become a police officer as earning a CJ degree....a friend of mine with a CJ degree from a very prestigious (for CJ) university is a lineman for the phone company.

My sister has a BS in Criminal Justice. She minored in counseling and special education because she wanted to work with juvenile delinquents. Unfortunately, she couldn't get a job. She's been working in the medical field as a practice administrator and other jobs. Now, 10+ years later, she's going back to school for nursing to become an RN. So yeah, it's a degree, so in general it could open up a bunch of jobs. And, of course, there's always McDonald's fry cook or Subway sandwich artist. :lmao: (I think my history degree qualifies me for those too!)
