Does Excelsior or Charter Oak assess a letter grade for taking Clep or Dantes tests?

    If not, who does?

Excelsior assigns a letter grade for the CLEP Subject exams. For CLEP General exams they award a Pass/Fail only.

For DANTES exams they award letter grades for all that they accept.

You can find and download their Student Guide to Credit by Examination at http://www.excelsior.edu/exold/804.htm (scroll way down to the Excelsior College Examinations Publications header (their website is a mess). CLEP info is on pages 10-11 of that Student Guide, and DANTES info is on pages 12-13.

Tip: To avoid opening the PDF file mentioned above on your browser, right click on the link (once you locate it) and select Save Target As... to permanently store it on your hard drive for future reference.

I read in the Excelsior handbook that after July 1, 2001 that in order to get a "C" for your score on the CLEPs, you need a score of 50 and above.

My question is will Excelsior require you to score 50 or high to consider it passing or just for a letter grade? Will you still just be able get credit by obtaining the ACE recommended score?

The reason I'm wondering is because I have quite afew exams under my belt but some are at or just above the ACE recommended passing score. I want to get as many as I can before applying to Excelsior.

My memory is that, generally, the policy at Regents/Excelsior has been to use the rules current at the time the exams were taken. That is, the letter grade score and/or the pass/fail score (which would be a minimum "C" in letter graded terms) would relate to specific standard scores enumerated in the College document "Student Guide to Credit by Examination", current AT THE TIME the examinations were taken. This would supersede any ACE score recommendations.

Put another way, your old scores should be assessed under the old scoring rubric. Best to check this with Excelsior for the definitive skinny, of course.
