I'm pretty sure there are few, if any, grants, scholarships or other perks to help someone like me fund a doctorate. I have been planning to pay for it totally out of pocket. But I thought I might post this question just in case there is something I have not looked into. Does anyone know of any assistance for someone in my situation.

    Long time K-8 teacher
    High GPA
Probably wouldn't qualify for assistance based on low-income

I don't think there is much out there except loans, maybe partially subsidized at best. Probably not much help for doctoral degrees in general, I would suspect.

    Doctorate Degree

My first question would be, does it need to be a RA degree ?
If it doesn't, have you looked at Aspen U. I'm sure you seen the information about the tuition at Aspen $6500.00 for the doctortae degree. That's an unbelievable price if it works for you. If it works for you and you can't start right away ask them for an extension. I asked them for one and to my supprise they agreed to do it for me.
    Anyway it's a suggestion.

    Good Luck

Oh yea, I was very close to going for an EdD at Aspen. It looks great and the price can't be beat. I almost pulled the trigger but the RA thing is what stopped me.

Have you found out if you can write it off on your taxes? Work-related degrees, under some conditions, are deductible. IRS doesn't like to give this one out, though, so you would need to be able to defend it if audited. If not, there is the Lifelong Learning Credit that will give you a 20% return on your paid tuition, with a maximum return of a few thousand (5k if I remember).

Thanks, MC. I'll make sure my tax guy uses that to its fullest.

Love the logo in your sig line. Very cool.

Ah, you have a tax guy. I do, too. He is the same guy who makes my breakfast in the morning and types all of my comments for me.

Want me to make a MichaelOliver logo? :D

I don't trust myself to stay out of trouble with the IRS, so I don't dare do my own taxes. I'm terrified of TurboTax because I've heard horror stories of how people have messed themselves up with it. The guy I use is so strict that I never can even step into the gray area on paying my taxes. I probably lose some money in taxes I might could have weaseled out of, but I sleep very well knowing that I have nothing to fear from a audit. So I don't mind a little chance of getting audited because of taking education credits.

Not to be too forward, but are you a member of a protected class?..like African-American or Native-American? Perhaps that is a route you can look into for funding.

My great grandfather was 100% Native-American. That makes me 1/8 Native-American. Somebody once told me that was good enough, but I am doubtful. Does anyone know about that?

I think you misunderstand the meaning of the term protected class. Sex or race, for example, are protected classes. Everyone is protected from discrimination because of their sex or race. It's not that any particular race or sex is treated as an endangered species.

Are you left handed? I heard of this one program, but you need to be left handed.

Although I am not Native American, I work at a Tribal College, so I am familiar with this. The answer is...it depends.

Each federally recognized tribe sets its own criteria for membership. What you could do is find out what tribe he belonged to, and contact that tribe directly. They will tell you what the criteria are for membership.
