What branch are we talking about?

I had no idea volunteer experience was something they would want or need. I have zero volunteer experience, unless you count all the countless active duty assignments and deployments I volunteered for while I was in . . .

I'm talking about USCG. I passed on the enlisted deadline today of 01Nov. (we have less time) for the next convening OCS board for enlisted/civilians. Volunteer experience is a pretty big deal. Things like a degree just check a box, things like volunteer experience (recent) in the community go to the whole person concept of what you can and do as far as a member of the community along with awards, recommendations, and everything you place in your narrative.

Good information, I'll look into that, but let me ask you this: Is there any specific form of volunteer experience or length of time in a volunteer capasity that is preferred? The only reason I stopped volunteering years ago at the SPCA was because I work 40 hours and I go to school.

No, there isn't a preferred volunteer experience as far as I have heard and you hit the nail on the head of exactly why it is important. The panel wants to see that you have been able to balance work, school, and still have the extra to give back when it counts. Imagine competing against Active Duty personnel who spend between 60-80 hours either underway or doing SAR and then still completing their degrees, spending time with families, and still giving to the community. I haven't done volunteer work here due to the lack of opportunity (small island community with very little options for community service) in areas that I would benefit. The panel is looking for a balance similar to one that you would find as an Officer who is an asset in all areas to the CG. Work, Family, and Community are important to you as an Officer and they don't want you to just be a bump on a log not accomplishing work and personal goals.

My MO here on Degreeinfo has always been if you can't impress them with your knowledge, then baffle them with your BS.

    : )

In all honesty, I reap more advise here than I give; but you make a valid point.

You should get in touch with an Air Force Medical recruiter. Ask them about the Medical Service Corps....I believe Emergency Management is now an accepted degree. Even if it's not, if you have basic business classes (economics, accounting, finance, etc...) you could apply and get accepted. I'm currently a Medical Service Corps officer and served previously as an enlisted guy (SSgt). I've been comissioned for about 3 yrs now. Your well with in the age limits of the medical world so don't even worry about that. One thing you'll have to take is the GRE or GMAT.

Oh yeah....Medical Service Corps officers are healthcare administators and serve in hospital functional areas such as Information Systems, Medical Logistics, Resource Management, Patient Administration and Group practice management......
