What kind of employers will accept a DETC degree?

Is DETC accreditation equal to RA?

Hello "The Professor." The only way you can write the above is if you sincerely believe that DETC accreditation is equal to RA accreditation. If your belief is correct, then in the "real world" (your words) it is indeed simply an issue of DL degrees verses B&M degrees, which is a red herring. Why do you believe that DETC accreditation is equal to RA?

Can we please not make this another DETC vs. RA thread? Please? Please? Pretty, pretty, pretty, please with sprinkles, cherries, bananas and chocolate fudge on top?

Professor and MeAgain. Please do not get into a DETC vs RA debate here. Those tend to get nasty and they defeat the mission of DegreeInfo and my intent in starting this thread.

I said nary a peep about the DETC. My original post was changed by the responder to fit an agenda. My position remains that the bigger obstacle job-seekers face are the biases DL degree holders face in general as opposed the just the NA degree holder subset.

If you set out the bait, don't blame people for taking it.

Specifying the accreditor as DETC and MBA's and doctorates as the degrees under discussion is going to skew the kind of answers that you get. There are more non-RA institutional accreditors, more majors and more degree titles out there than just those.

I think that the answer that you are seeking might look something like this:

Degrees from academically obscure schools with non-RA institutional accreditations will typically perform best in non-competitive hiring, assuming that there isn't some initial screening process that's removing all but RA academic qualifications from consideration. That's usually the 'check-the-box' situations.

But that typically isn't the end of it. It's usually not the case that anyone who satisfies some set of check-box requirements is automatically hired. The HR department screens the applications and then passes them along to some hiring committee. That's where hiring starts to get competitive, since the committee is going to be trying to find the best person for their open position.

And when it comes to doctorates, the employer almost certainly has need for advanced expertise. If that wasn't the case, then they wouldn't be looking for somebody with a doctorate. (I guess that an exception might be when a doctorate is required for some kind of licensure necessary for the position.) If an employer needs advanced expertise in a particular area, then they are probably going to be very interested in applicants' doctoral departments reputation in that specialty.

I know that if a university is looking for somebody to teach the Greek philosophers, they will favor a graduate of a program with a strong reputation in ancient philosophy. If a biotech firm needs an expert in protein synthesis, they will likely be interested in graduates of doctoral programs with strengths in proteomics. The people doing the interviewing and making the hiring decisions will be specialists in these areas.

So I'm kind of inclined to agree with "the Professor" that Degreeinfo's obsessive belief that a degree program's accreditation is the paramount and perhaps the only consideration, is a bit of a red-herring. At least when it comes to advanced graduate degrees.

When we are talking about doctorates, hiring committees might not even care a whole lot what the institutional accreditation was. What they will care about is academic strength, probably in some very specialized areas relevant to the nature of the particular open position. They will judge doctoral programs by reputation, not by institutional accreditation.

Now in the case of DETC and ACICS, that kind of scrutiny is likely to eliminate the accreditors' entire lineups, since none of the current schools seems to have a strong scholarly reputation in anything. But that isn't really because of any employer prejudice against non-RA schools. Low-end RA programs probably won't be very competitive in those kind of situations either. But high-end non-RA programs like those at Rockefeller University or any number of overseas universities almost certainly would be and in fact they already are.

Very true, Bill. You can't blame someone for getting angry when someone else is telling them that the degree they worked so hard for is substandard, especially when they know it's as good as any other. I think that's why mention of this kind of topic can get nasty. I wanted to satisfy my curiosity, in light of the inexpensive degrees at Aspen, without starting a war. So there was no intentional bait being laid out.

Your information was especially informative. Thanks so much.

It goes beyond that. This is something that I mentioned before; for some reason, people look at their degrees as extensions of themselves. The little plaque they have hanging on their wall doesn't show the amount of work that was completed, rather, it somehow serves as validation of one as a human being. This is both why school is such an easy sell and people are defensive about their degrees. Then the debates come. MY degree is better... NO, MY degree is better and blah blah blah blah blah.

Maybe, I'm the last person on earth who doesn't think that way? DETC vs. RA. vs. unaccredited vs. oh what ever, I'm listening to Bob Marley, drinking gin and juice and eating stuffed peppers. I know you want some.

It's also interesting that some people are willing to say nasty things on a thread that they would never have the guts (or lack of wisdom) to say face to face. Its funny that, for some, interpersonal etiquette often does not transfer to discussions such as these.

The way that quite a lot of people act in online forums and the reasons that they act that way is a study in itself. One that will certainly be too depressing for me to undertake.

I'm wondering if such people are showing their true personalities (seriously depressing) or just acting out due to anonymity. (Still depressing, but slightly less so.)

Eh, the problem is that most of the people saying they are 27 are actually 12. The only forums I go to are education related forums, where people are more likely to actually be how old they claim to be.

Funny you say that. Bob, Julian, and Ziggy is all I have been listening to for the past 6 months. I saw Julian in "concert" last year. It was a small bar with a dance floor and there were about 75-100 people there. It was like a private party and he played for 2 hours!

If Michael doesn't mind the destruction of his thread- consider the current plight of reggae. You have good reggae: anyone with the last name Marley, then you have cow dung reggae: everyone else.

At least 20 times a day (I am NOT exaggerating, NOT NOT NOT exaggerating!) I hear "Hold Yuh" by Gyption playing from different cars passing by. If the song was any good, they would have ruined it for me. Thankfully, it was and always will be cow dung to me.

We looked in the reggae section at the local music store and it has 19 Marley CDs and one "other". We just laughed! Have you listened to Julian Marley's Awake CD?

Look what they've done to my thread! :)

I went to youtube and found Hold Ya because you made me curious. I think your assessment of it was spot on.

If you were ever curious as to what the lyrics were, I would suggest that you prepare yourself a barf bag before you look them up. Although I don't understand half of them (its Patois), what I do understand of it is unbelievably vulgar.

Oh yea, never. I wonder if a thread on this board has ever made it all the way through its life without going off track?

I just ate so I think I'll stay away from the lyrics.

Well, yes, plenty. However, that era ended as soon as I became a member.

Anyway, back to the original topic, but first, has anyone here seen Toy Story 3 yet?
