Why do you think that it has little name recognition?

I have a hunch that schools with football teams which are routinely ranked in the top 25 nationally are relatively well known. Yes, I get it that not everybody follows NCAA football but schools like this are routinely on the news, on magazine covers, etc. As such, the Hokies football program keeps the school's name out there similar to Iowa, Nebraska and Michigan State.

This is certainly not true in engineering and related fields. But perhaps you aren't familiar with such fields, if you want a PoliSci degree.

For engineering specifically, US News ranks Virginia Tech far ahead of schools like Iowa, Michigan State, or Nebraska. In fact, based on the current engineering rankings, Virginia Tech also tops a few other schools you may have heard of -- including Ohio State, Penn State, Duke, Johns Hopkins, and Yale.

    Thanks for sharing.

Pretty sure I told ya'll that new online programs from American U. were coming and several members here chastised me. I'm not one to say "i told you so" but yes I am, I. Told. You. So.

Is there a degree that combines public admin with city planning? I want to become mayor! :)

If you want to be a big cheese at a local level, an MPA would probably fill the bill. It would be more likely to get you into some key administrative position, such as City Planning Commissiioner.

MAs in Poly Sci are best for broader political ambitions such as Governor, Senator or President.

Yorktown University has lost its DETC accreditation. Wish I knew why. It looked like a good program.

    Here's why, according to DETC:

So DETC was concerned about Yorktown's financial position. Why would Yorktown have financial issues? Well, here's a clue from the Colorado Commission on Higher Education, which voted to revoke Yorktown's state authorization after they lost their DETC accreditation:

Realistically, it may be difficult for any accredited school to meet standards for financial responsibility if their business model requires tuition revenue, and if the total enrollment is "fewer than five". So Yorktown's problem may simply be that they couldn't attract enough paying customers to convince DETC of their long-term viability. I suspect that other DETC schools have struggled with this issue as well.

Yorktown continues to operate in Colorado without recognized accreditation, but they now grant non-credit certificates instead of degrees.

Apology if this is a double-post, I tried to start a thread with this question earlier but it never got approved.

Anyway, I'm looking at applying, in the next 6 months or so, for MA program in International Relations. However, my undergraduate degree is in an unrelated field (Journalism). To make my application more attractive, I was considering take 1-2 online classes from the DiploFoundation (diplomacy.edu). My questions, I suppose, are (to anyone who might have insight):

    (1) Would this actually be of any benefit in making my future application more attractive by demonstrating commitment to the field, or would it have no real effect?
    (2) Is the DiploFoundation well regarded, poorly regarded, or a non-player in the field of IR?

Any other insight others might have one way or the other, particularly first-hand experience, would be much appreciated.

    Thanks!
