For a friend, I would like advice on a distance MA or MS in poli sci or government.

Additional requirements: RA, Brick and Morter existance. Degree must actually be in poli sci or governemnt, NOT liberal studies or similar with concentration in poli sci or government.

Cost is an issue as always, as is name recogition.

    Thanks in advance!

Virgina Tech is clearly the best, but I've been beaten to it!

In a related field for those professionally interested in politics, ie, campaigning, there is this from DC: George Washington University offers the MA in political management online
The George Washington University - Master's Degree in Political Management - Online

The VaTech program is rigorous with selective entry. It's also not very well known in the industry. The Regent program is a good one but I'd avoid it unless (like me) you're a Christian with conservative political views. But the coursework is very good and it's a respected degree. The GW program is also pretty good, but it seems like practically everyone in the biz has this degree, so it's value (as a credential, at least) might be somewhat lessened. This isn't to say that the coursework is weak or you won't learn a lot, just that having it on your resume may not have the desired impact.

What about a degree in public policy or public administration? I'm just trying to come up with ideas to expand your search.

I don't doubt what you're saying but I'm curious about what "industry" you are referring to.

    Also from Ashland's website:

"We have heard from several graduate faculty, including one who was a part of our Ohio Board of Regents review team, that they would accept students with our Masters degree into their Ph.D. programs."

I wonder if Ashland U did not see the gap but ambitions initially offered by the distance and online oriented Yorktown University and decided to take it further.

An MA in Government (with history and economics) is what the latter offers, with a similarly conservative/libertarian curriculum. A year ago they gained DTEC accreditation, but still have no RA - thus limiting the utility for students and the impact their program can offer.

    Ashland suffers no such limitations.

Finally, back the MLA/MALS point I made above, the degrees are similarly priced as other private universities like Georgetown large MALS program or Johns Hopkins' MLA - about $21,000 (plus residence costs).
