    Hey, all,

You've probably noticed the new header at the top of the page, and the little "quick degree finder" widget on the right hand side.

The "quick degree finder" is a tool that refers people to degree programs they might be interested in. It is not run by us, but we do get paid a bit when someone requests information on a school. We will eventually be replacing it with our own database, once we update it.

Over the coming weeks, you'll see more changes, including a new articles section, and an all-new site design (the new header is NOT representative of the forthcoming new graphic look of the site). We have a bunch of other projects in the works too, but I'll wait till we're a little closer to having them ready before I mention them :)

If you're interested in pursuing a degree program, using the widget and requesting information will help us out a little, and hopefully get you some detailed information on the school you're considering. Please give us feedback if you use it.

    Thanks!

Having our own database widget would be terrific- FANTASTIC IDEA; but respectfully, that widget is lame. It only hits on the 4-5 online for-profits that come up in every internet search. Until then, Ted is my favorite widget :)

So, I tried the degree search (*Chip thinks $$CHA-CHING$$*), and thanks to it I have now discovered...

    KAPLAN UNIVERSITY!!!

Anyway, those changes sound nice. Look forward to them.

I don't like a significant portion of my screen occupied by a search tool that does little for me, please minimize the size, put a link to the tool, or have it disappear when a forum member logs in to the site. And while we are discussing changes I also don't like the message that occurs when I choose not to post for a period of time.

I have to agree with the other members here... this widget is not just lame, is actually detrimental to the reputation of the forum.

It basically only shows the classic for-profits with aggressive marketing style (Kaplan, Westwood, Full Sail, etc...).

This is in stark contrast to this forum, which is known as a reliable source of knowledge about DL degrees going beyond what we normally see in subway ads.

Maybe it's a little lame, but who cares? It's fine by me. My brother-in-law owns a site that gets literally millions of hits and he has often expressed how much it costs to keep a site going. A popular site has tremendous costs associated with paying for the bandwidth necessary to service the users. If that widget makes it easier for you to keep this great resource going for us, then by all means, I welcome it. We can adapt to a little inconvenience.

Chip, here's a nosey question: Are you, Randell and Kizmet the originators of Degree Info? Is this site your baby? Or are you just working stiffs like the rest of us?

It certainly reminds me of the old days and the commercialize site this once was. We all need to pay the Bill$.

Careful, there might be a contract out on you for revealing that info.

I hate to break down and ask because I usually like to figure things like this out on my own, but please walk me through the steps to do what you described above. Thanks!

I have to agree with the others that the search tool is kind of lame. The only non for-profit school that came up in any search I ran was for George Washington University and one of their $50k plus programs.

Well, look, since I have been a member DI has been ad-free. The money has to come from somewhere to run this thing, so I don't mind the search being there. I am, however, concerned that a newbie to this site will believe that the search is a part of this site.

I came across DegreeInfo while looking for inexpensive, respectable, ways of earning credit and getting a degree. If the first thing I saw was that search, I probably never would have come back here again. My first home, if I ever buy one, should cost me less than a 4-year degree from Phoenix or AIU.

Maybe if it it somehow made clear that, for the time being, that search is basically just an interactive advertisement, untill the DegreeInfo database is up.

eLearner makes the same mistake, in my opinion, that the Peterson's and other guides made: not distinguishing between totally non-resident and short (even very short) residency. I learned, over the years, that for many people, the difference between 100% non-resident and 99% is, as I wrote once, like closing your door 99% of the way when the maniac is coming up your path with an axe.

The sick, the imprisoned, the ones who can't travel for whatever reason. So I ended up, for my most recent 5 or more editions, with two quite distinct sections: one for the 100%, one for the 99% and less.

The fact that eLearner finds only two Master's in Humanities, and neither one is California State University Dominguez Hills, the pioneer and leader in this area, is disappointing. Ditto for absence (in many tries) of the 'big three.' Would this sponsor, I wonder, tolerate a small box up there in the right, saying, in effect, "Quick Degree Finder will find some of the available programs you may wish. For others, you will need to do your own research on this forum, or elsewhere, or simply ask."

Yikes, Maniac. We didn't know this about you before. I'm keeping my door at 100% from now on. :)
