    I'm thinking about getting a second bachelor's degree from Charter Oak State College. On the website it says that you have to "meet all distributive requirements." Does anyone know if this refers to just concentration requirements or to Charter Oak's overall bachelor degree requirements as well?

    Thanks.

    Hello,
    I had the same questions and called the admission office;
    Yes you have to fulfill the general education requirement in addition to the 30 credits required for the concentration:

    WrittenCommunication...............................................6cr
    OralCommunication....................................................3cr
    InformationLiteracy................................................13cr
    EthicalDecisionMaking...............................................3cr
    U.S.History/Government..............................................3cr
    NonU.S.HistoryorCulture........................................3cr
    GlobalUnderstanding...................................................3cr
    LiteratureandFineArts.............................................3cr
    Social/BehavioralSciences.............................................3cr
    Mathematics...............................................................3cr
    NaturalScience.......................................................46cr

    Hope this helps

    That doesn't make sense... If you already have a degree from there why would you have to complete gen. eds. again?

    You only have to complete required course you do not have from your first degree (plus the major)
    For example I'm looking at a 2nd TESC bachelors degree and would have to take a computer program in addition to 30 units for my major.
    I've seen this requirement at several universities including the Cal State Universities.

    why not just get your masters?? A 2nd bachelors would be a waste of your time and your money.

    It makes sense if you're taking a completely new direction. If your first undergraduate degree was in the humanities or social sciences and you want to go into something scientific or technical you almost need to start over.

    Because I am studying geology for fun and since I'm earning credits I might as well get a degree (but it may take a while since I earn about 6 credits per year).

    Ian,

    Have you seen this program: http://www.distance.msstate.edu/mais/academics.html ?

    It lets you concentrate 21 hours in one area and doesn't require much in undergraduate prerequisites. It's also cheap and from a big name school.

    You do not have to repeat the classes you already completed;
    For example Excelsior requires 3 credit hours to fulfill the Written English Requirement whereas COSC requires 6, therefore an additional english class will be required in this case.

    Thanks everone for your replies.

    It does seem strange to me that if you already have an RA bachelor's degree they would make you fulfill their requirements. As for me, I'd rather spend my time working on concentration classes.

    Luckily, I seem to have most of Charter Oak's gen ed requirements in my first BA but I'm still trying to figure out how one would take an "oral communication" class online. :)

    I met my COSC oral communication requirement by taking the Public Speaking course offered by BYU independent study. It's a good quality course that's quick, easy and reasonably priced. No books are required, it's all online. You can submit your speeches on an audio tape.

    For a 2nd BA/BS, Excelsior only requires a student to complete the requirements of the major (usually 30 credits). Gen eds and electives are not required.

    Thanks for the BYU info. The price is actually comparable to some community colleges around me. It's nice to find a private four-year school that's reasonably priced and friendly to distance learning. Incidentally, they also have a bunch of free courses (i.e. not for credit) that some might find interesting for self-enrichment.
