Although DETC has approved CCU's accepting applications for these doctoral programs, the fine print states "...DETC has not applied to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) for recognition of the professional doctoral degree which would include the Doctor of Education Degree Program".

    What does this mean?

It means that these doctorates have been approved by the Federal Governments Department of Education BUT not by CHEA. Based on a conversation I had with a senior DETC representative today the most significant level of approval is from the department of Education. DETC plans to consider seeking similar approval of these doctoral degrees from CHEA in 2011.

Why do most of the DETC accredited schools offer Ed.D. vs DBA?
I would think a business degree is more popular than an education degree.

I am actually looking for a cheap accredited DBA with emphasis in accounting.
    Any suggestion?

It will be interesting to see if CHEA changes its scope to DETC in 2011:

    Council for Higher Education Accreditation:

First Recognized: 1997 (charter member) Last Reviewed: 2001 Next Review: 2011

    Present Scope of Recognition:
The accreditation of higher learning institutions that offer programs of study that are delivered primarily by distance (51 percent or more) and award credentials through the master’s and first professional degrees. The Distance Education and Training Council Accrediting Commission will not accept applications from institutions that award a degree beyond the master’s level, e.g., a doctor’s degree, including academic doctorates (e.g., Ph.D) or doctorates in professional fields (e.g., Ed.D).

*Please Note: The Commission's scope may differ from U.S. Secretary of Education's and CHEA's.

Great news for CCU. I hope these programs are a great success and that CCU will expand their doctorate offerings in the future. I/O Psychology would be awesome...

I don't believe that CCU is planning to offer a doctorate in Psychology. One of the primary reasons being that such a doctorate will pose problems being accepted for licensure in the majority of states.

Good news indeed, but the total cost seems to be around $20,000. The South African route still seems the best financial route for some.

That's true. However, one might need to travel to South Africa multiple times during the study. It all adds up.

True in some cases but not all. A friend of mine earned a South African doctorate for about $2500 total cost and no travel.

    Hi JWC,

Which South African university was that?
    What did he/she study?
    What was his/her application process?

    Thanks

    And, when did he/she study?

My aunt Dorothy earned a Masters from SUNY at a total cost of under $500, but that was 30+ years ago.

Hi there. What do you plan to do with a DETC-accredited doctorate in accounting? I've never heard of a job that requires it. Just curious. Thanks.

I believe we have witnessed in the USA education system a shift in the value of college degrees. When I was a kid, a High School Diploma used to mean something and a Bachelors degree meant a lot. Today the Master's degree is taking the place of a Bachelors. However, obtaining a doctoral degree can be a double edged sword especially, in an economic recession/depression.

Corporations may think you are "overqualified." One will just have to frame their resume/CV to the level of employment they are looking for. For example, if you are trying to get a position driving trucks, don't tell them you have a doctoral degree. In this economy, putting food on the table is the goal!

You know the difference between a recession and a depression?

Ans: A recession is when you lose your job and a depression is when I lose mine. :(
