Has anyone had experience teaching online for Grand Canyon University? How is admin. support, pay, etc? I earned my M.Ed there in 2004...would that be an advantage in the application?

I don't think that having a degree from the same school youwish to teach for is an advantage.

    Teaching from the same school....

Thank you for your reply. Will you elaborate on why you don't think it's a good idea to teach for the same school from which I earned my degree? I appreciate your time and thank you.

Some accrediting bodies will mark a school down for having a large number of inbred faculty members. From what I have seen and from some input from some people I know who teach at GCU, they have a large number of graduates teaching there.

    inbred?

Thanks for your reply and it makes sense. I must say, I have never thought of myself as "inbred" until now!:D

Rather than start a new thread, I'll just resurrect this one. I'm scheduled to begin my faculty orientation training for GCU in two weeks. Does anyone have experience adjuncting for them? I'm mainly curious about the regularity of course assignments.

    Thanks.

I taught for GCU from 2009-2010 and also have several friends who do/have taught for them. Unless the pay has changed in the last year, it was $1600 per 8 week course with a Master's Degree and $2000 per course with a PhD. The main thing I did not like about GCU is that you tended to have more supervisors in your classroom than any other school I have taught for. Everything at GCU is automated, so if you do not post in the discussion area x number of days, or have an announcement posted by a certain time an alert will be sent to your supervisor. That being said, in the past they have tended to give a good load of courses to their adjuncts. The only problem I have heard recently from some friends is that GCU is moving to hire more people in the local Phoenix area to teach online who can also teach on campus. Because it is contractual, these friends were given no notice as to why their course loads dropped until inquiring after the fact. Hope that helps.

Well, my online training starts on Tuesday of next week. I emailed GCU to inquire as to how soon after I'd be scheduled to facilitate a course but I've not (yet) received a reply.

I hope its shortly after. I'd really REALLY like to quit my counseling practice and concentrate on finishing my dissertation while paying (most of) the bills by facilitating online courses.

I'm now mid-way through my faculty training. Angel seems to be less effective to me than Blackboard or UOP. The Faculty FAQ seems to imply that I'll know how long it will be before first course assignment as soon as a week after the training completions are turned in.

Is that the experience of those of you who have facilitated for GCU? I'm curious as to how regularly courses are assigned and how many.

Angel was purchased by Blackboard and will be eventually phased out. The school I teach at that uses Angel is eliminating it in early 2012 in order to make the transition to a new LMS before Blackboard stops supporting the Angel platform in 2014.

They are okay, but their class scheduling is the worst I have come across to date. You will get a couple of classes in a row, then two or three months before you get the next one. This is not typical at other online universities I have instructed for. Also, there pay is on a tier system, so you never know what you will get. Don't be too surprised if a class that you were expecting to instruct gets cancelled at the last second due to low enrollment.
