I am currently researching to find a school in California that offers a PhD in Psychology (clinical preferred). There are so many schools and institutions it is difficult to narrow down. Credibility and accredidation is important as well as price and time to complete program. Does anyone have any recommendations on doctorate programs in psychology?

Are you looking specifically for a distance-based or mixed distance + some class required, or conventional? That will help narrow things down.

The other issue is APA accrediation of the program, which is separate from regional accredition of the school itself. APA accreditation isn't required, but many jobs do require employees to have APA-accredited degrees, so if that's a factor, that will significantly reduce the number of options.

Feel free to post more info. Also, I think if you search our archive, it's pretty likely this has been fairly recently discussed, and that might give you at least some places to start.

I am most interested in APA accredited so that I do not run into any problems down the line. I am interested in some flexibility simply because I will need to work to support myself but understand that it will take some sacrifice and dedication. I want a degree from a school I will be sure will not be look down upon when read on my resume. Does this make any sense?

I believe that the only distance learning doctoral program in Clinical Psychology that is APA accredited is at Fielding.

However, there are many states (maybe most states?) that do not require APA accreditation for licensure. Unless you plan on living in 10 or 20 other states once you've earned your degree, it may not make sense to limit yourself to just one school. I've heard that admissions are quite competitive and then thee's the pricetag as well. Check out all your options, then decide.

That is where I am at now and I have a never ending list of options...trying to narrow it down is the hard part. Just want to make sure I wont run into any problems later when trying to find a job or get licensed shall i choose to do so.

Maybe I'm a bit slow on the uptake but are you saying that you want to go to a B&M residential school? If you're looking for a distance learning program there really are not many options. Maybe 5 or 6? If you're looking for residential options then you're kinda in the wrong place. However, I'd say, narrow it down geographically then narrow it further financially. I've heard it said that admissions to these programs is quite competitive and so all your scores will need to be top notch. Also, it probably wouldn't hurt if you had some sort of relevant work experience. Good luck.

If you want to be Clinical Psychologist, you really don't have any unaccredited, inexpensive, and DL options. You have to loosen some constraints. You really need to look into the APA accredited schools that require on-campus attendance.

They are APA and otherwise accredited. There is no short cut to a legimate APA accepted psychology degree. Good luck!

If you'd consider a Psy.D., CIIS has a nontraditional residency PsyD program and is APA accredited.

I'm not sure how often you have to attend on campus but it might be worth a look, particularly if you're somewhere near the SF bay area.
