I have a B.A. in Communication but I want to become a teacher. Can anyone suggest any programs that will prepare me for teaching that are online?

An affordable program would be great, but I would consider a good university with a more expensive program. I have been looking at the USC Master of Arts in Teaching online, does anyone know of any similar programs?

I'm from Washington state if that helps.

    Thank you!

Does it have to be online? I'm not sure where in WA you are but there a few smaller schools in Seattle that have MIT programs. These obviously won't work if you don't live near Seattle.

I'm not sure that the name of the school matters that much when it comes to a MIT as the real goal is to get the state license. Once you have that, your pay, etc. is going to be decided based on seniority. I'm not sure it's worth paying a lot of extra money to graduate from a "better" school for an MIT degree. As long as it's RA and teaches you what you need to know to be a successful teacher, I think any school should meet your needs.

If you are looking for a degree specifically for online teaching you might try Athabasca university. I believe they offer it as a masters and online.

City University www.cityu.edu and Seattle University www.seattle.edu among them. If you're on the opposite side of the state, try Wazzu www.wsu.edu.

Look at ABCTE It is very reasonable and is accepted, apparently in 9 states.

    ABCTE.org

    There are others.

Take a look at Western Governors wgu.edu. To my knowledge WGU is still the only NCATE accredited online program.

I want to teach elementary school, maybe math. And for those of you who suggested non-online degrees I appreciate that but I really can't to do that right now. I recently had a baby and am staying at home with him.

Does anyone know anything about getting an MAT in a different state than where I would be teaching?

As far as I know, it's a little bit of extra paperwork but nothing crazy. People move all the time after going to school. I think you end up getting the certification in the state you went to school in and then you apply in your "new" state for them to accept it. They might have you fill out some forms and maybe take a test. Not sure what WA does. Some states have reciprocity and accept other states teaching credentials. Your best bet is to take a look at the webpage for the agency in WA that certifies teachers. There will be all sorts of information regarding out of state credentials.

I would first want to point out that since you have a Bachelors degree you do not necessarily need to earn a Masters degree in order to become an elementary school teacher. Where I live you only need to have 18 credits of undergrad math courses to be an elementary school math teacher. Every state has alternative routes to teacher certification. Where do you live? You can easily earn 18 math credits at LSU.

It's cheap and potentially fast. Once you've got the teaching job you can earn a Masters and get most of it paid for by the school district (taxpayers). Find out the entry requirements from your state dept. of education. Schools are dying for enthusiastic teachers.
