    Greetings, All!

As a former regular on this discussion board, I thought I'd drop in to share the exciting news that I recently completed my PhD in Practical Theology with the University of Pretoria. After 5 1/2 years of work, I successfully defended my dissertation on July 8th. I was pleased to receive a distinction for my work.

For those of you who are still in pursuit of your academic goals, I wish you well!

    Congratulations! And Questions...

So the big questions in my mind are:
    1) Were you able to do everything at a distance or did you travel to Pretoria? If you traveled, how often and for what purpose?

    and

    2) Was the administrative part of it easy? Getting classes, picking an advisor for the dissertation etc.?

Sending you congratulations on your success!

I was not required to travel to Pretoria. Fortunately, I did have opportunity for a series of really productive face-to-face supervisory sessions with my research promoter. He maintains close links with Princeton Theological Seminary and had several lengthy stays in Princeton during the period in which I was enrolled in the PhD. I made trips to Princeton and stayed on the seminary campus. This came with the added benefit of access to one of the world's premier theological libraries.

I found the administrative aspects of working through the PhD with Pretoria to be quite smooth. Everyone was quite responsive and helpful. Particularly toward the end of the process, there were several people on the Pretoria campus who offered me tremendous assistance from afar.

Picking my research promoter was not difficult. In fact, he was one of the primary reasons I chose Pretoria. He is an internationally respected figure in a couple of areas of expertise that are closely related to my research. In my initial correspondence with the department of Practical Theology, I indicated my desire to work with this professor.

    Dr. Cory,

again my congratulations for this achievement. I was wondering as you did not travel to Pretoria, did you defend your PhD Thesis via a video conference or in any other way? Does the University have a VLE?

    Thanks and regards!

Congratulations Cory! Almost six years of work. That will say something to the people who think that a South African doctoral degree is quick and easy (Hey, it's just the dissertation, right?" Did you travel to South Africa to defend or did you do it electronically?

By the way, something happened in this thread that seems to have slipped by most people. Welcome back to degreeinfo oxpecker!
