    Hello,

I have been visiting this site since the last 5 days and have found really cool. So, i registered hoping you guys would probably help me with your advice.

I am from Japan and living here. I am looking for an online/distance undergrad degree leading to CPA.

My problem is that we do not have any foreign universites or examination centres, I might not even get any private tutors either. I would have to fly to singapore/hongkong for that for fre weeks. But, I dont really mind that as far as it makes me dreaming for an accounting future:D

Right now, I am looking for an online undergrad accounting degree initially leading to CPA. I have requested the prospectus for the following universities.

    1. University of London External degree - accounting n finance (This one is the ACCA)

(Got the below info. from here:))
    2. Southern New Hampshire University Online accounting program http://www.snhu.edu/2230.asp
    3. Peru State College http://www.peru.edu/professionalstud...accounting.htm
    4. Indiana State University http://www1.indstate.edu/degreelink/...istration.html

Besides, ACCA or CPA?! which one would be better?!

Any thoughts, suggestions, and/or recommendations for other online/distance universities are welcome.

I would recommend Peru State College because it is the cheapest and has a variety of accounting major courses to choose from unlike Indiana State Univ that only has 4 or 4 accounting courses.

You can also check the following schools:

1- Eastern Oregon University offering a BCBA in Accounting.
2- Athens State University offering a Bsc. in Accounting.
3- Northeastern University offering a Finance and Accounting Management degree that is AACSB accredited.

    Good luck.

You can always go back and complete coursework at a big-name school for resume purposes.

I am not sure if there are any undergraduate programs that will lead to CPA. These programs only satisfy the requirements for taking CPA exam. Once you have completed the 120-150 credit hour requirements, depending on the state, then you can sit for the CPA exam. The exam, as i understand, is held only in the USA.

Regarding comparison between ACCA and CPA, i feel the equivalent of CPA in the UK would be CA by ICAEW.

Hope you find the program that meets your need.

Well, if you do not have plans in completing a MBA degree in the future, you can choose Northeastern University.

But if you plan to complete a MBA degree, then I would say go with Peru State College for an undergraduate school (Bachelors) for now as by far it is the cheapest option.

And you can invest more money for a MBA degree in the future.

I'm not sure this is sound advice. MBA program don't only look at test scores and GPA. They consider the academic rigor of where you did your undergraduate education. Right out of undergrad I worked in the admissions department for one of the graduate programs at highly ranked university in New Orleans. All bachelors degrees are not created equal, at least not in the eyes of AdComms at most graduate schools. In applying to graduate schools a 3.2 GPA from Northeastern would probably carry the same weight as a 3.7 GPA from Peru State. I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying that's how they operate.

Beyond that, if the OP is interested in becoming an accountant and earning his CPA his best bet would be to complete a bachelors degree in accounting then enroll in a MAcc (Master of Accounting) program. These programs generally take one year of full time study to complete, or two years going part time. The hours completed in the MAcc program also count towards the 150 hours needed to sit for the CPA exam.

    ^I Like what AUTiger said.

Thats it! I donno much about the uni. in US. So, it looks like Northeastern is better than the peru state as of reputation. Or for someone like me who isnt planning to study further or goin to any graduate school.

@Magister..Thanks for introducing the washington state. Its starting from this year:D but the fees is the same for distance or campus:s.

Besides, I am not interested in any MBAs right now. Doing a CPA alone would be quite hard I know. I am already 23 and dont have a degree. So there are a lot of other issues I need to think about.

    For now I like:
    1.SNHU`s accounting program,
    2.Northeastern`s
    3.And yea, peru state.

Well, if you want to do your CPA in a short time, you do not have to complete your Bachelors. You can earn a 2 years Associates degree in accounting and do your CPA in Delaware. Here is the link to their requirements:

    http://www.beacpa.org/how/index.php

All they need is an Associates or Bachelors or Masters degree with 21 credit hours of accounting.

I think this route will save you tuition and 2 years in time and since you are not in the US, it doesn't matter where you are going to get your CPA certificate from because you will not be practicing in the US.

I think Northeastern University offers a 2 years Associates degree in Accounting.

Peru State College is a state college in Nebraska. Established in the 1800's, PSU is now 140 years old and was Nebraska's first college. Why are you worried about the reputation?

    Hi Sugarfly,

As you probably figured out by now CPA requirements are different for each state. When I was in Tokyo, I did hear of some US schools in Hawaii, Guam, and California that helped Japanese get their CPA. Unfortunately, I do not remember the name of any of the programs, but you can probably find them with an internet search in those locations.

Also, I remember hearing about a US CPA cram program offered through O-Hara College of Business. They might be helpful if you need private tutoring.

I did most of my MBA via DL when I lived in Japan (including my accounting class). It was a very lonely road! Good luck!

    Hi,

Good to hear that you have spend life here.

You are very right with the Ohara school and japanese going to the nearest places to get the rest of the credits. I went to Ohara, but you know I need a degree before anything for CPA.

So, I am here to find some info about the right school for accounting degrees.

Oh yea, japan is a lonely planet:p
Thanks a lot for your reply:) Ill check out the hawaii option:)

Ah, My bad. Actually I never heard of Nebraska either:s but yea, thats me being unaware.

PSC is just the cheapest. Im thinking to just start with it and see how it goes rather than wasting time pondering on other things and then getting more confused and ending up in many other options.

    :confused::confused:

    Sugarfly,

An important question that you should consider is whether obtaining a bachelors degree in account and a CPA from the U.S. will allow you to work as an Accountant in Japan. I would make sure that you know your local regulations first, before pursuing your education and certification in another country.

    Best of luck,
