Condolences for your loss. When you lose a parent you've lost your best friend and advocate. Take some comfort in the fact that she no longer suffers. God bless you.

I don't know how I missed seeing this thread, but you certainly have my best thoughts and prayers for you and your family.

My mother passed away on April 22, little less than a month ago. It still doesn't seem real. I know it happened, but my mind doesn't want to believe it, I guess. Best wishes with your studies. I hope everything works out for you.

Heartfelt condolences. I went through something similar a few years ago, and feel you pain.

Jennifer, I just saw your post and want to tell you how sorry I am at the loss of your mother. Although you knew your mom had cancer and the potential outcome, it's never easy. Regardless of how much one might try to prepare, it's impossible. I'm also sorry about your plans and how things have changed there.

I don't remember the ages of your children but are they old enough and responsible enough to work on their own or could you get a teen to stay with them and help them? When people decide to homeschool, I always suggest they start in the summer, so they can get an idea of how it will work out. Remember you're not bound to the school year, and it takes MUCH less time for them to get their work done at home than at school. Typically, you're looking at 3-4 hours depending on their age.

Pug, I am so sorry at the 'loss' of your wife and son and how it completely blindsided you. Your grief is just as real as Jennifers--both are losses. In addition, your son is in the middle. It's hard to fathom someone just walking away, especially when there's a child, and not trying to work things out or discuss problems with their spouse. I can't imagine the shock it must have been, or the pain you must feel.

    Hugs to both of you!

Thankfully, our homeschooling isn't in jeopardy. Simply, my mom was going to step in and supervise their school for me while I attended classes- but as things turn out, I wasn't 100% comfortable with that idea- maybe everything happens for a reason. I always said that I would attend classes only to the extent that it didn't interfere with my "day job", and nursing would have.

    Hi Jennifer,

Sorry about your loss, a mother is a beautiful person and I know I would have a hard time carrying on if I lost mine. Have you considered an online nursing program?

Re: online nursing programs- I'm not an RN.

Is there a local on-campus LPN programme available as a first step towards becoming an RN; there are LPN to RN distance education options.

Hi Jennifer, I do not think you have to be an RN to be in Excelsior's online associate degree in nursing. Neither do you have to be one to enroll in Grand Canyon University's nursing program either.

She might have misspoken. Excelsior does required ASN applicants to be LPN/LVNs or have other experience in a certified position providing direct patient care.

They all do. I appreciate the enthusiasm at finding alternate suggestions, really i do, but if you want to be a nurse, you need F2F clinicals. (and let's all be thankful for that!)

The earlier suggestion to pursue an LPN locally and then do the rest online, via an LPN to RN/BSN/MSN, might be an option for you. Also, while it would require some work, you could become a paramedic and then apply to the Excelsior ADN program.

Excelsior only requires a few days of clinicals in Albany. Everything else is done online. You do need to have previous medical experience though (which is why I suggested going the LPN or paramedic route).

I am sorry to hear that pug. You are a good guy and don't deserve that. Hang in there. Of course, hang in there sounds so cliche, but I don't know what else to say. Sorry.

Drexel's got online MSN-NP programs (except internship & practicum). They have an online BSN program as well, if you already have RN licensure -- which is pretty much the case everywhere.

I'm comparing B&M RN programs in NJ to start after I get done with my BA.

Honestly, I would put off making a decision for a little while. You've just been through something really traumatic and you probably need a bit of time.

    Best wishes,

    Griffin
