Here's a nifty little idea, to save 20% on computer ink, and do some good for the planet. There is a new font called “Ecofont,” free from a Dutch company. Each letter is full of tiny white holes, comprising 20% of the area, so when you print, it uses 20% less ink. To my eye, at 10 and 12 and 14 point sizes, it looks very much like Helvetica. In bigger sizes, of course you can see the holes. Free download from http://www.ecofont.nl, and works on PCs and Macs and Linux.

Thanks for the tip. It’s greatly appreciated and I will recommend it to friends as well. I always support efforts big or small that will help preserve the environment. It’s time we join in the green movement going forward. How about you?

My smart son-in-law wonders if paper with microscopic holes covering 20% of the surface would be a viable product?

I downloaded and installed the EcoFont to test the print quality.

On a related note, most people and organizations could get by with much thinner paper made from 100% recycled materials for the majority of internal documents. How many people insist upon printing their emails? A lot. Laser printers do not need very thick paper to print crisply.

I have been urging my organization to switch to paperless pay stubs.. every 2 weeks 1000's of individuals get an envelope with their pay stub even though they have direct deposit. What a waste...
