I still need one RA math class

SPC was a big pain. It took four months to get my wife accepted into a bachelors program and she had an AA from FCCJ. They kept telling her she needed to follow up on their admin issues. We did not even deal with financial aid because we were going to pay cash. All this to take one class to see if she liked it. We ended up just forgetting about the whole thing.

I'm not surprised. Using Fl Bright Futures has been a pain especially taking classes from a secondary college. Thankfully this summer will be our son's last class from them--a 1 credit internet research. Last year he finished at both college around Dec. 12. Tesc had his transcript from FCCJ on 12/23 and from SPC on 1/6.

    Updates:

    1) I haven't heard back from Rutledge as yet.

    2) I've asked SPC about ALEKS and they've never heard of it.

    3) I'm intrigued by the offerings at calcampus.com, and I've sent e-mail to advising asking if the credits will be transferable to SPC (they should, since they're RA) and which of the math classes they offer will satisfy my missing 3 credits.

It would be up to SPC as to whether or not they would accept the courses. I would be sure and get it in writing. I just glanced at their website and need to look at it some more. It seems like they offer college classes but no degrees? Their grading scale is also 94-100% for an A.

Another question...what math are you looking at? One thing you have to be careful of is finding out what math SPC will accept as a MATH credit. For instance, when my son took the CPT at PHCC and tested into Intermediate Algebra they said it would be accepted as college credit (an elective) but not as a math credit. If SPC's policy is the same (neighboring counties) then none of the choices look that appealing for a math adverse person--IMO. Ignore me, if I'm already telling you stuff you know! Here's a list of their college courses. (They all give ME that pit in my stomach feeling!)

    MTH303 Basic College Mathematics $495
    MTH304 Intermediate Algebra $495
    MTH305 College Algebra $495
    MTH306 Finite Mathematics $495
    MTH307 College Geometry $495
    MTH310 College Trigonometry $495
    MTH311 Business Mathematics $495
    MTH314 College Pre-Calculus (4 credits) $620
    MTH315 Beginning Calculus I $495
    MTH316 Beginning Calculus II $495
    MTH318 Business Calculus $495
    MTH320 College Calculus I (3 credits) $495
    MTH321 College Calculus II (3 credits) $495
MTH325 College Calculus I for Science and Math Majors (4 credits) $620
MTH326 College Calculus II for Science and Math Majors (4 credits) $620
MTH327 College Calculus III for Science and Math Majors (4 credits) $620
    MTH328 Linear Algebra (4 credits) $620
    MTH330 College Statistics $495

As much as I hate to say this, from Calcampus I'd pick MTH305 College Algebra. It matches up with the same course at SPC under a different number. Since there are no proctored tests at Calcampus I'd be ok, I think.

Hopefully you can get written confirmation from SPC that they will accept it. There are some online algebra calculators and homework help that may help....

I am a complete math moron, and didn't know any algebra at all when I started working on my degree. If SPC will accept it, I recommend the Business Math course. A similar course at Penn Foster College actually taught me algebra and I finished the course with an "A".

I'm sure that SPC hasn't heard of ALEKS. What you need to do is to show that ALEKS is ACE evaluated for the three math credits you need. In other words, the burden of proof is on you.

    Go to:

http://www.aleks.com/homeschool/course_products - and pick out the math course you need. Then go to:

http://www.acenet.edu/nationalguide/organization/index.cfm?oid=1004997 - and pick out your course. Print out all of this info and take it to SPC.

If SPC accepts it - then you'll need an ACE transcript when you are done:

    https://www.acenet.edu/transcripts/

    ALEKS is $20/month - IMHO - it's a great deal!

I will also try that method, using ALEKS and ACE. Not sure if SPC accepts ACE or not. Also, does ALEKS have proctored tests and so forth? I'm not very familiar with them and don't see it on their site (I couldn't find it, anyhow).

ALEKS has no proctored tests - assessments are open book and untimed.

    Straighterline

If they do not accept ACE then use Straighterline, you get to choose from a couple schools to have the credit awarded at.

Many people use Fort Hays State, an RA school, so there shouldn't be any issue.

The exams are not proctored. There are four exams and you are done. The exams are not as easy as ALEKS, but they are shorter and I believe 70% is passing. You get a letter grade based on percentage.

I think the whole thing costs about $120.00.

I took the first offering of the Intro to Logic course at COSC. A pretty good choice for anybody who really hates math and needs some more math credits. It was more like working puzzles than math, which made it kind of fun. The exams are not proctored, but they are timed. However, you have 2 hours and there's not that many questions.

Ok, but what do I have to pay at FHS? I know I will pay Straighterline, and I know I have to pay the admissions application fee at FHS, but what else would I have to pay? This looks like a strong possibility for me.

Ok, now I think I understand, it isn't too clear on the Web site:

Straighterline talks about $399 per course or $99 a month. I thought that meant that classes cost $399 and they would bill you $99 a month until the total was paid. Now I understand that I can take as many courses as I want, one at a time, for $99 a month.

Based on that, I'm targeting 2 months to complete College Algebra if I enroll with Straighterline.

I also was under the impression that I would have to pay for admission to FHSU and then have to pay per credit for the credits I earn from Straighterline. But apparently that's not the case. I now understand that yes, I will have to seek admission at FHSU ($30 application fee) and then the 3 credits I earn from Straighterline will be issued by FHSU but the amount I pay to Straighterline is all the tuition I'll have to pay. Apparently the Straighterline partner institutions issue the credits with no additional fee.

So I now understand that I can take College Algebra for $198 in two months at Straighterline and the only other fee to get those credits will be the $30 admissions fee at FHSU.

    Is that correct?

    Nearly correct

Yes you can take the two months to do the 4 or 5 exams ( i think it was 4). Or you can do them in one day.

If you use the proper resources and you have a descent understanding of the math, then you can finish it in one day. Otherwise you will need to do it at a slower pace.

But the rest of what you typed is correct. FHSU takes about two weeks to get the paperwork done and the grade transcripted.

Man - you need to snap out of it ;) I would just go with SPC and get the last class. Go to RateMyProfessor.com and find an "easy" math teacher. Look here - http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/SelectTeacher.jsp?the_dept=Mathematics&sid=2880&orderby=TAvgEasy&toggel=true

Again, I can't just "take the class". If I could, I would. I have to either take a placement test or take several remedial classes one at a time over the next several semesters.

And I'm a member of RateMyProfessors and always use it before selecting a class.

Damn...if it was that easy I guess you would have done it.

You're right. If I could just enroll in the class and take it, it would have already been done. But I have those roadblocks in front of me.
