    Quoted from the FBI website

    https://www.fbijobs.com/JobDesc.asp?scr=001&requisitionid=368

Applicants must possess a four-year degree from a college or university accredited by one of the regional or national institutional associations recognized by the United States Secretary of Education.

When did they change this?? It used to be regionally accredited resident degree only (no Exceslior,TESC, etc.).

I'm starting to feel that NA degreesmay not be the ''copper standard' as compared w/ the "gold standard", RA degrees? Has anyone here been turned down from a job because you had a nationally accredited degree?

    Regards,

    Bill

PS I'll stick w/ RA degrees for the time being just in case. <G>

  2. VERY recently. Last year, they made a departure from the days of J. Edgar Hoover by changing the "bachelor's degree from a residential program" requirement for agent applicants to "bachelor's degree from a [RA] program." If they've changed that to ANY DOE-recognized accreditation, it would've been within the last few months.

That it's taken this long is actually a little ironic. J. Edgar Hoover, LLB (George Washington University, 1916) earned his ONLY earned degree nontraditionally: Night school.

As I have said in other posts, the state agency I work for will consider Nationally accredited schools as meeting requirements (specifically I saw CCHS).

The US military accepts TRACS for the Chaplaincy (along side RA, ATS).

So, maybe less like the copper standard & more like the silver standard and that more so because of utility. I do not know that the DETC standard is any less. I have seen a couple of DETC schools which *appeared* to have stricter requirements than some RA schools (remember there is a spectrum within RA in terms of quality). There is no doubt that RA is still a more versatile degree due to perception and utility. That may be changing somewhat. Capella & Liberty will consider nationally accredited degrees.

It goes back to the old saying "check with wherever you want to use the degree to ensure it will meet your needs & consider future plans".

My police agency has turned down several applicants because their Associates or Bachelors was not RA.

I wonder when the FBI will hire their first applicant who does not have a RA degree? Regardless of what their website says, I'll believe it when I see it.

    need help with this

I just found this site and need to be educated on the different types of accreditation.

I thought I has found what I needed. But, now I am not sure.

Will the FBI take a degree from Exceslior or TESC. I am a ex-Army now commercial pilot that just wants a degree to get the job. I would like to get a Masters late in a subject that appeals to me.

Thanks for the help before I sink money and time in the wrong direction.

If the FBI now accepts all regionally accredited degrees (as opposed to only residentially-earned regionally accredited degrees), then yes, they should; Excelsior and TESC are both regionally accredited through the Middle States Association.

    Good luck.

    Cheers,

I'll go one better, and wonder when they'll hire their first applicant with a DL undergrad degree, RA or not. It hasn't happened yet in the two divisions that cover my current territory, and these are not exactly small-town, backwoods offices.

I am not sure if this was just agents, but were they not on a hiring freeze not too long ago? So, they would be hiring ANYONE including DL degree grads?

    .

They are hiring over 900 new agents. If you happen to be in one of the following critical skills and pass the testing then you can be fast tracked to Quantico.

Computer Science and other Information Technology specialties
    Engineering
Physical Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, etc.)
Foreign Language Proficiency (Arabic, Farsi, Pashtu, Urdu, Chinese [all dialects], Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese)
    Foreign Counterintelligence
    Counter terrorism
    Military Intelligence experience

I just passed phase one and I should be starting phase II if I am deemed completive enough. I have 2 RA degrees, but if I meet my AC soon I will ask her what she thinks of non-RA or DL grads chances in the process.

As I've mentioned before, the FBI will now accept regionally or nationally accredited degrees for employment purposes. That will open the gates for DETC.

For the Special Agent position, the FBI has 5 employment "tracks"; Law, Accounting, Language, Computer Science, and Diversified.

It's probably obvious, but you can read the requirements for each right here
