It's possible to do a very substantial portion of the Excelsior CIS degree by examination. You may have completed (excepting the WER (Written English)) all of the general education requirements, and perhaps, have accrued useful elective credit. You would receive credit for exams comprising your MCSE and MCDBA, though the number of credit hours awarded per exam is meager. Useful, not to sat essential credit will also be awarded for passes in the ICCP exams. From what you write, it may be you will have little difficulty with these tests. If you have existing appropriate assembly language programming credit, that would be very useful, too. You might also be able to portfolio documented related work into useful credit.

Go to the Excelsior web site and read the Technology catalog, and the Student Guide to Credit by Examination, thoroughly. These will prove valuable resources.

The next in the "BA in 4 Weeks" series is due in a few days (A BUSINESS DEGREE IN 4 WEEKS - watch this site!), but will detail how to earn the Excelsior BS in Business in under a month. However, at a later date, another in the series, will detail earning an Excelsior BS in Computer Information Systems in an inordinately short time, primarily by examination, by way of ICCP, Microsoft, TECEP, CLEP, DANTES, and RCE examinations.

I recieved 31 credits for my MCSE, ICCP core and Microcomputing and Networking. I went with the Liberal Studies option for my degree. I belive you can get the CIS major with some more ICCP exams. I strongly recommend looking back on Lawrie's posts. There is a wealth of information on finishing your degree through examination.

I'm currently enrolled in the Excelsior CIS program, feel free to contact me here or via email for assistance.

If you need English Comp. you'll have to take the Excelsior exam (they will not accept CLEP for Written English Requirment).

At this time they give no credit for MCDBA because they cannot get the 70-200-series exam info from Microsoft, although they will award 1 credit hour for 70-175 or -176 exam(s).

You should get full credit for the MCSE. I'll post some direct links for you within a couple of days (I'm behind on a CLEP due this Tuesday).

He does not *have* to take the RCE/ECE English Composition exam. He can fulfill the THREE credit WER by passing a suitable college course. This may be preferable for a non native English speaker. The RCE exam is but one option.

It is NOT the case that "[a]t this time they give no credit for MCDBA". It is simply not true. Credit is awarded for individual exam passes, not for certifications.

In fact, since the MCDBA contains much common core with MCSE, it's meaningless to say he will receive no credit for the exam passes comprising that certification yet receive credit for the MCSE. I'd think it likely he has NT 4.0 certification. Why would you single out the MCDBA for no credit? As I remember it, the requirements for MCDBA NT 4.0 could be fulfilled without recourse to ANY 200 series exam, as could the NT 4.0 MCSE.

BOTH the new 2000 MCSE and the new 2000 MCDBA require passes in 200 series exams, he would have equal problem with both, or either of those certifications. It is no surprise that Excelsior has not evaluated these yet.

If Jongpil Jeong, has NT 4.0 Microsoft certifications, he will receive credit for them. In the unlikely event he is an all new MCSE and an all new MCDBA, and has gone the 2000 track, he will receive some credit now and the rest in due course once Excelsior have had time to evaluate the new series of exams.

He can go here to check how much credit he will be awarded, and how much will still be required - http://www1.excelsior.edu/itweb/itcts01.html

Here, for a summary of requirements - http://www1.excelsior.edu/itweb/degrequire.htm

And here, for the ICCP exam credit award - http://www1.excelsior.edu/itweb/degrequire.htm

    Additionaly . . . . . .
below is a listing of the requirements for the NT 4.0 MCDBA, and below *that*, a listing of credit hours Excelsior College will award for Microsoft examination passes. Please compare the two.

Correct, of course... I was assuming a test-out since he specifically mentioned "I have to take english composition by DL".

Yup, over-generalization on my part... my thought prcess was on the Win2K track at the time. However, I have been cautioned by my Excelsior advisor (over the phone) that they are indeed having problems obtaining the 200-series exam evaluation info from MS.
