    Hi all,

I was wondering if any schools out there offer "taught PhD or doctoral programs"?

If you know any can you please suggest?

    Thanks

To my knowledge, American doctoral programs would be considered to be "taught" programs because there is a substantial amount of coursework required prior to undertaking the dissertation phase. This might be contrasted with doctoral programs from countries such as England, Australia or South Africa where the sole requirement is to complete the dissertation. I don't believe that there is a doctoral program anywhere that consists solely of coursework as this would defy the definition of a doctoral degree which involves the creation of a piece of scholarly work that adds to the fund of knowledge within that specialized area.

I believe that there are a few "American style" doctoral programs in England and perhaps other spots in Europe and I know that many professional doctoral degree programs don't require a dissertation per se but some sort of final project that might be similar in scope to a dissertation. I'd bet that the rules about those projects vary from program to program and school to school.

Most American programs are actually considered to be taught programs, as a student has to take many courses/units before embarking on a thesis. Taught classes take majority of the time of the whole doctorate process. Does this help? Can you be more specific?

    Thanks to all contributors.

Can anyone give specific examples of schools offering taught Ph.D's in the areas of IT Mgt. or MIS?

    Thanks
