I only get one hit for it in the first 50 Google responses and it is for an unanswered wiki question that asks if it is accredited.

A review of its accreditation page tells me that everybody should stay far, far away from it.

Where are you located? Is this thing advertising where you are?

I was wondering why it called itself 'University of South Central LA', since South Central is perhaps the toughest, poorest and least-stylish part of LA. But the initials USCLA suggest that it's trying to rip off both USC and UCLA.

The DLEC ripoff of DETC is kind of cute too.

I wonder how it got the .edu url.

We are probably going to be seeing a lot more flat-out degree-mills boasting California addresses (probably just forwarding addresses to perps located elsewhere) since California currently doesn't have any enforceable private post-secondary education laws at all. It's anything-goes here in the land of Californication.

accredited by DLEC (dlec.org) - NOT to be confused with DETC, which is recognized by USDoE.

Univ of SouthCentral is not even licensed by the State of California.

I would not trust it.... yet (unless it decides to take steps toward licensing and accreditation by the State and US Dept's. of Education)

From the fact that the .edu url was registered in 1995, I'd guess that it might have once belonged to a legitimate school that changed its name or closed or something, and that somebody is squatting on the address.

I just Googled 'usla.edu' and got 95 hits, some of which looked very scholarly and legitimate. So I investigated a few of them and they seemed to be mistyped ucla.edu urls. For example, 'mednet.usla.edu' should be 'mednet.ucla.edu' (the UCLA medical school's network). 'botgard.usla.edu' should be botgard.ucla.edu (the UCLA botanical garden) and so on

Despite the NZ address, the '44' telephone country-code seems to belong to a UK phone-number.

Many businesses are using the 233 Middleton Rd. address in Wellington, which appears to house an office-services firm. Interestingly, one of the other clients using that address is the purported government of an imaginary country called Antarcticland. While this thing seems to be an Italian creation, Antarcticland's Minister of Foreign Affairs (a proud doctoral graduate of Buxton University) is resident down there in NZ:

    http://www.antarcticland.org/contenuti-sito/articoli/ministries-of-state.html

The same gentleman is also the Secretary General of the semi-defunct Diplomatic Organization for Economic Development (DOED) which operates from the same Middleton Road address in Wellington NZ:

    http://www.doed.org/

(If you click on the little map, it takes you to Euclid University.)

Note the simularities between the DOED website and the International Organization for Sustainable Developent (IOSD) site:

    http://www.iosd.org/

Reportedly doed.org and iosd.org used to (and perhaps still do) reside on the same server with Euclid University.

My own intuition tells me that it's more than just a coincidence that dlec.org is registered at the same New Zealand business-services firm that services some of the Euclid-things. There's a connection, these people know each other and are associates of some sort.

For the record, William Howard Taft University is not a member of anything called the DLEC (Distance Learning and Education Council). Until this morning, we had never heard of this organization.

A letter demanding that our name be removed from their website will be mailed on Monday.

Hey! Even my beloved alma maters, Western State College of Colorado and City University of Seattle, have this "prestigious" accreditation!

Dr. Bear: You might also want to note that your alma maters, the University of California System and Michigan State University, are both one the list of DLEC schools as well.

My 17 year old pointed out that it appears that if you are on this list:

    http://www.utexas.edu/world/univ/alpha/

    you're a DELC "Accredited" school.

Not too hard to copy, paste, and format a little bit.

And oh, BTW, U.S. citizens need not "apply"

Two of mine (Curry and UMass) are on the list, but Quincy College is not.

Did I get ripped off with my Associate's degree?

I think they don't list any 2-year institution in the list. Such as community colleges....

I'm reminded of those items one finds in novelty catalogs, with titles like "World's Ten Greatest Golfers" -- and you get a poster with ten names, starting out #1 Tiger Woods, #2 Jack Nicklaus, #3 Ben Hogan . . . with your name as #4.

It's kind of interesting that the Google results for 'usla.edu' included this page which at the moment delivers us to the 'U. SouthCentral LA' homepage (there's no telling where it will lead in an hour):

    http://www.usla.edu/?ref=SexShopu.Com

SexShopu.com? It's a foreign language website (the language looks like Turkish) that's selling sex-enhancements like Levitra and Spanish Fly. It doesn't provide a physical address for itself and the phone number seems to have a Costa Rican country-code (probably a call-center). Whois doesn't provide any contact information for 'SexShopu.com' besides an anonymous website registrar with a Turkish telephone country-code.
